If you're driving between Austin and Houston, you absolutely have to stop at Peter's BBQ! It's a true Texas gem, and my family has been making it a stop for years.
First off, the food is incredible. The BBQ is out of this world, with tender, smoky meat that melts in your mouth. But what really sets them apart are the amazing homemade sides and fantastic desserts.
While great food is one thing, the staff at Peter's BBQ is what truly makes it special. They are some of the kindest and most real people. A HUGE, special thank you to the man who was sitting out back taking his break this past Labor Day, Monday. My mom got into a fender bender on Highway 71. This man was so incredibly kind and helped her fix her tire so she could drive back to Houston. Our family is so incredibly thankful for his help.
You won't find better BBQ or friendlier people anywhere else. Peter's BBQ is a must-stop and a place we'll keep coming back to for years to come.

If you travel between Houston and Austin you’ve probably seen this place. Next time stop by if you haven’t and get the chopped beef sandwich. Honestly the best part is having an actual fluffy bun that won’t die as soon as the juices touch it. Trust me just do it!!

We’ve stopped here for bbq numerous times over the years, but this time was disappointing. Had chopped beef sandwiches that were stringy and needed bbq sauce. The buns were somehow soggy, tho it wasn’t from sauce. The sides were ok but lacking in much flavor. We’re wondering if the business changed hands, because it’s not the same. Very disappointed.

During my summer internship at Synopsys in Austin in 2025, my intern colleague and I took a weekend trip to Houston. Along the way, on Hwy 71, we stumbled upon a hidden gem in Fayette County: Peter’s BBQ.

This old-school, family-run spot gave off a cozy, nostalgic vibe the moment we walked in. It’s the kind of no-frills place that doesn’t need hype—just solid food and genuine local charm. We ordered a classic Texas plate: smoky brisket with a gorgeous smoke ring, tender ribs with a sweet-savory glaze, and a juicy sausage served over white bread, jalapeños, and onions. The sides—homestyle potato salad, buttery boiled potatoes, and crunchy slaw—tasted like someone’s grandma made them.

The self-serve soft-serve ice cream at the end was a delightful surprise, especially after a hearty plate. The dining area was quiet and old-fashioned, complete with communal tables, red trim, and a proudly worn-in look. The restroom, while rustic, had a quirky wood-panel aesthetic that felt straight out of a countryside cabin.

We also spotted a flyer showing Peter’s BBQ had recently been voted “Best Barbecue Overall” in the local paper—brisket, chicken, ribs—you name it.

Peter’s BBQ might not have the cult following of Austin’s famous smokehouses, but it delivers something just as special: honest food, friendly faces, and a true slice of small-town Texas. Definitely worth the detour.

The BBQ was delicious!! For people complaining about prices in other reviews, they obviously haven't priced a brisket lately!! Their prices are very fair for what you are getting! I think this is the best BBQ I've ever had. The potato was HUGE!!

Best BBQ!! The girls at the counter are So Nice and explain the menu and specials! The home made sides are so so good! Love the creamy cucumber salad. The BBQ is so tasty and moist! The Blonde lady in the dinning area is a hard worker and so welcoming! I will definitely come back here again! I just love the ol time atmosphere with all the old fashioned signs!! Take your kids and family and dine in!! They have a Buffet during the week with different meats on different days all you can eat from 10:30 to 1:00. Amazing!!!!
