A great place to stop for a beer and a bite to eat in downtown Garland.
Great selection of bar food standards. My wife and I had comfort foods today. She had chicken pot pie. I had shrimp, sausage and grits. They were definitely homemade and were delicious (kudos to Josie!)

Update hours
If you're retired and want a quiet atmosphere during the weekday, this is for you. Otherwise, prepare to be bored and wait a long time for the waitress to take your order or give you more drinks. This place used to be nice, but seems like they are trying to save by only have one person running the entire main area. I support local businesses, but this was a let down.

We recently visited Tavern on the Square, and unfortunately, it wasn’t quite what we expected. We thought it would be more of a restaurant, but it turned out to be more of a bar atmosphere.
When we arrived, the first thing we noticed was unfinished Halloween decorations piled in a corner, which made the space look messy and disorganized. Our first waitress seemed overwhelmed trying to manage several bar customers at once, so it took longer than expected to get our menus and drinks.
My husband ordered a premium Old Fashioned made with Maker’s Mark, I ordered a Whiskey Lemon Drop, and our son had a Roy Rogers. The first round of drinks was decent, but my husband’s Old Fashioned was very sweet, and he could barely taste the bourbon. When we ordered a second round (after a shift change), the new bartender told us they were out of Maker’s Mark and had to use a different whiskey. That made my husband feel like he was underserved on the first drink since it seemed they were already running low on the bourbon he specifically ordered and paid extra for.
Before the shift change, we also ordered a Jäger bomb, and the first waitress seemed unsure how to serve it—she even asked us how we wanted it, which was awkward since it’s a standard bar drink. It didn’t give us much confidence that she knew her way around the bar.
We ordered the dip sampler appetizer, which came with guacamole, salsa, cheesy beans, and brisket queso with tortilla chips. It was okay—nothing special. My husband had the club sandwich with homemade chips, which was fine but not memorable. My son had an Italian hot sub with fries that was also just average.
I ordered the roast beef hoagie with au jus and sweet potato fries. Before I ordered, the waitress told me it was one of the best sandwiches on the menu—but it turned out to be the worst thing we had. The onions were barely cooked and crispy instead of caramelized, and the meat was rubbery and tasted like plain deli roast beef. The sweet potato fries were the only part I really enjoyed.
To top it off, when we tried to tip our first waitress before she ended her shift, she refused it in a rude and dramatic way—walking all the way back to our table to return the money and making a scene in front of other customers. It was uncomfortable and unprofessional.
Overall, the food was mediocre, the service inconsistent, and the atmosphere disorganized. This place might be fine if you’re just stopping by for a drink, but it’s not somewhere I’d recommend for a sit-down meal.

Small local bar on a corner of a beautiful old downtown garland. Right in front of the park with tables outside, small, local, affordable drinks, most of the times I’ve gone there have been after work. The bartenders have been amazing every time, friendly , helpful and attentive every time. I tried the nachos once and they were so good. Will keep coming back in the future. Chill, good location and affordable prices would be the things I like from this Tavern.

It will be a while before we eat there again. A group of us (7 people) went there last Saturday (July 26) about 6 pm. The place was full and there was only 1 waitress & she was also the bartender, so she was very busy but she was very nice. Our food all came out at different times and wasn’t up to the normal standards. I ordered the shrimp & sausage grits and it appeared that the cook had emptied a whole jar of paprika on top of it and it was so spice that it burned my lips & tongue. My husband tried it & he couldn’t eat it either & he liked spicy food. On an earlier visit, a friend had gotten it and I tasted it & loved it and was excited to get it. I sent it back and they didn’t charge me, but I was really disappointed. Everyone agreed that the food wasn’t nearly as good as usual and they need more servers.
Great food and service

Did not like
I’ve been to this location multiple times, the food is decently priced. The blackened salmon on top of a Caesar salad is defiantly my go to. I’ve had mainly good experiences here except being denied a table as a two, because servers were being cut with no open seats at the bar going in for dinner on a Saturday night. The servers for the most part are great, however the management on the other hand is a tyranny. Management is extremely rude, and disorganized. If you’re looking for a decent place to eat not a bad stop. Just hope you don’t have to deal with management worst of it being the General Manager Allison.

Great spot along the Garland town-square.
Mix of regulars at the bar-counter and local tourists coming through. Cold beer and friendly staff - couldn’t ask for more!

SERVICE TOO SLOW PRICES TOO HIGH 😒
Dorothy is AMAZING, a true Rockstar under pressure. Making the time for small talk with every customer even on a busy night is a balancing act anyone should admire. Great service.
Ashley, Dorothy, Jeanne, and , Laura are great! Burgers are awesome!! Happy hour prices are good, and the crowd seems friendly. If you’re lucky enough you may get to meet Bernie the local avant garde hair stylist and magician! Music bingo on Wednesday nights are packed and fun so get there early.
