Usually I LOVE this restaurant, the gumbo is excellent, which is why I wanted to go here today. I recommend it a LOT on Facebook - because I really feel like they have the best gumbo "roux" in our area. When I tried to pull into a parking space, my daughter said "don't pull in there mom, there's all kinds of glass." I'm pretty oblivious to this type of thing so I pulled into the space two spaces over. Very quickly I discovered WHY there was glass in the parking space. A very nice red truck had it's passenger side window smashed. Evidently they had Christmas gifts in the back of the truck - all of those were taken. Needless to say, I chose not to stay - didn't want my car to be broken into also. The thing that bothered me the most about this experience was that I had my daughter go in to the restaurant to report the incident to the guy at the cash register. She told him what happened (I watched) and the response from the man was "I'm sorry that happened to them." I realize it's not his fault, but it did happen to one of their customers. You would think the least he would have done was notify someone to go clean up the glass right? And maybe give them some kind of gift card to encourage them to come back? I realize it wasn't the restaurant's fault, but it wasn't the customers fault either. With a truck, where else do you leave your valuables other than the back seat? I felt very sorry for the couple that this happened to and I'm not sure I'll be visiting this location again. If something like this ever happened to me, I'd hope the restaurant would make a little more effort to be sympathetic. And I just read another review that this happened to their car 9 months ago at dinner - his was one of 4 vehicles that got broken into that night. He stated the restaurant has done nothing to "beef up" security.

This place was HORRIBLE!! The entire restaurant had an overwhelming smell of some sort of floor cleaner that they clean the floors with, and then on top of that the shrimp, fries, fish, even the cocktail sauce, all smelled and taste like this floor cleaner, it was disgusting. I called to let them know, and whoever answered the phone just wanted to argue with me, and said, I was a first person in 15 years to ever say such a thing, well, there’s a first for everything. He was extremely rude and disgustingly ugly to me and said he would not give me a refund unless I brought his food back to him. Well he can have it!!!
I have been eating at Captain Tom's since 1992. The seafood is consistently good, if you want fried. The food is always fresh, and the oil is frequently changed. 5 stars on that. The service has slipped since moving to the new location, and I do mean that it can be horrible. I was given a plate of raw oysters full of water. On another occasion, I waited for 11 minutes at the cash register to PLACE MY ORDER. Still, the seafood is wonderful. I guess I will try again.
For this establishment priding themselves a bough to call their restaurant an “oyster bar”, it was far from expectations. You would think an oyster bar would have all the condiments necessary? Think again here. They bring you the oysters on a plastic plate full of water, not even cold water, instead of bringing them on a bed of ice. The oysters got warm within 2 minutes of being in front of me, and the crackers were stale, and no horse radish was included in the presentation. The shrimp were average and were brought out at the same time as the oysters, causing my food to get cold as I ate the oysters first. On top of that if you don’t have cash, you’re not eating here. Seems suspicious to only be requesting cash.. might be a good idea for the IRS to investigate. This is a step up from McDonalds… won’t be coming back here.
food was real good !!!!!!!!
This is such a great place for lunch - but get there early if you want a seat where the action is. Oysters are freshly shucked in front of you - the shrimp and catfish are cooked to order and the breading is always superb!
I absolutely love this restaurant! The crust is amazing 🤩
Captain Tom's must have moved a while back but the address needs to be updated. I had to call to get directions and being from out of town, I basically got lucky. Once inside, it is a loud interesting environment. The seating is at the bar or facing the windows on stools. The food was good. I had a seafood platter. The stuffed crab was my favorite. Service is pretty good for as busy as they were. Everyone was friendly and I had a nice dinner.
Love the food. The restaurant is already too small -- crowded and loud. The seating is uncomfortable. We always order out and even then, the wait times are long. But it's better than eating there. They need a website and takeout menus. Come on, guys. Join the 21st century. I would give you a 5 except for this. The food is excellent but your venue keeps your service from being excellent. It hinders your organization and movement. It also is not good for safety. Because of the crowding, there was confusion with our order.

We've been going to the "Da Boat" since 2000. Captain Tom's has always been the best Houston restaurant for shrimp, oysters and catfish. The aesthetics have improved greatly over the years. No tables, counter service only and it's usually very crowded during lunch and dinner hour. They have a limited, excellent, menu. You have to try a Michalada , just name your beer. This is a very informal seafood restaurant. Just like the Southern Mexican Coast. I agree the "Texas Mini" is the best (shrimp & catfish).
This place was recommended by a New Orleans native and chef. The place was crowded and was a little confusing for first time guests. It was difficult getting three seats together so if you have a big party, good lucking sitting together. The gumbo and fried shrimp were outstanding and my wife enjoyed her oysters. The staff was very friendly and the service was really good.
Best shrimp and least expensive oysters ever! Friendly fast service in a very casual environment. They have a short menu, but they serve those few items perfectly.
Best seafood in northwest Houston - Hands Down! Great food at very reasonable prices with service to match. Neat environment as you sit at a bar in the front of a boat. Texas Mini is hard to beat. Add the gumbo and some hushpuppies and you are set!
If you like fresh oysters, delicious gumbo and crab fingers, you need to visit this place. Informal, friendly, and amazing seafood.
