Inconsistent hours and customer service
Great customer service, fast and prompt! Food is great, especially the sandwiches on their fresh baked bread. Good variety of selections. Would recommend!!

We just happened upon this restaurant in South Houston (about 3-4 mi. south of loop 610) and we were so fortunate. They have an extensive menu for a cafe. The pancakes are large, thick, but not too heavy, and of course good. They have something called a steam bar, where you pick out an entree out of several choices, vegetables, and a salad if you desire. The entrees are a large serving. The food is very good. They can probably seat about a hundred folks so there is not usually a wait. The prices are very reasonable. Parking is at a premium, and be careful about parking in the next door McDonald's, because they have signs that threaten towing your car. The location is just about a mile east of the Gulf Freeway (I45). We will stop here every time we are in Houston, in route to Galveston.
I'm staying in Pasadena and was disappointed that all the places I had saved on TripAdvisor to eat at are a really long way away. Keep in mind that Houston is a really huge city. This morning I was looking for a good breakfast close to my hotel. I found it. City Cafe is a real gem. A real American diner. The owners ancestry must be Greek, but the dinner is full on American Staff are lovely, service was super fast and the food was cooked fresh and is lovely. Try City Cafe. It's well worth it.
The service was awesome and friendly. The breakfast was fantastic!! We have had a great time here! Everything our party ordered was super fresh and hot. The perfect choice for a yummy breakfast in an old diner environment.
We ate here three times. I had chicken n dumplings, mushroom n Swiss cheeseburger, and chicken parmesan. I tasted a family member's chicken fried steak and another's liver and onions (I don't care for liver but it was tasty) All of the others were really good! Hand breaded cfs and chicken parmesan. Not one of us had a complaint, except that there was too much food! Owners, offer a half plate--you'd make a little more profit and avoid wasting/throwing away so much food. A great little restaurant that's been around a long time. My folks ate there together as teens 50+ years ago!! Such a little gem!!
This place has withstood the test of time, not by accident, but by design. The City Cafe has been around since the early 50s, not much has changed other than recently banning smoking in the joint. You can order off the menu or hit the buffet line, they both are equally as good. The homestyle cooking has kept me coming back. My first visit was back in high school and as luck would have it, my Pop lives near by. When I visit from Arizona, The City Cafe is my first stop. The portions are huge and made from scratch, they use the finest ingredients and and do not skimp on quality and portions. I have never had a bad meal here, the parking lot is always full so that tells the place must be doing something right.
City cafe was really good! Good potions of food. We did had to wait a while for our food but my coffee cup was never empty.
Eating at City Cafe is like a step back in time. This diner has been here a long time and it looks like it, and that's okay. There is counter, booth and table seating. The menu is full of breakfast and lunch items, always available. I had a fantastic Reuben, delicious gumbo, and hash browns cooked to perfection. When you're in there, you get the feeling that the staff have all worked there a long time, and there are a lot of regulars sitting at the booths and counter. It is truly a step back in time and unique dining experience today.

A friend picked up the Man Friend and I at our hotel after we got stuck in Houston overnight. We stopped here for breakfast before our flight. Breakfast for 3 was less than $35...two huge biscuits with gravy was only $5! It's a fun little divey restaurant, full of opinionated old men and strong coffee.
We dined here while in Houston. I had the one egg breakfast and they accommodated me by adding chicken strips as my meat because I don't eat beef/pork. My husband ate the gyro and he said it was great. The prices were inexpensive and I get the feeling that locals frequent the diner on a regular basis. I would definitely recommend it eating here.
Stop for a great breakfast whenever I go by the BMW motorcyle shop on College. Old school breakfast along with steam plate fare surew to stick to your ribs.
I found this place when I googled breakfast places. So worth the drive!!! City cafe has been around since the 50's. I loved looking around and enjoying stepping back in time. Very clean and the staff was very friendly! I had the western omelette with a side of bacon and coffee. Everything tastes so good!! I've been looking for a place to eat breakfast while working in Houston and now I have found it! Earlier this morning, I stopped at a "breakfast" place but they had no customers. But when I arrived at City Cafe, the parking lot had tons of cars so that said something to me. The cafe is east of Hobby airport on the east side of I45. Stop and visit...you will be glad you did!!
I love this place, good atmosphere and great waffles. My husband loves the omelets too. My only complaint is the scrambled eggs, wayyy to buttery. But everything else there is delicious.
