I celebrated my birthday at Le Colonial last week and the night was perfect! The service was fantastic and made the whole evening feel really special. For starters, we ordered the crispy shrimp and pork roll and the pan-seared chicken dumplings, which were both delicious. For dinner I had the glazed pork rib — the one thing I specifically wanted for my birthday — and it lives up to the hype every single time!
We finished the night with a Queen Bee vodka lemon drop martini, which was the perfect way to end the evening. Such a great spot for a celebration or just a really nice dinner out in Houston. I’ll be back ASAP!

Food was ok. Literally the worst cocktails I've ever had in Houston. Need a new bar program asap
All of the waitstaff were very kind and professional, except for one older male server (in his 60s). The way he spoke to me made me feel uncomfortable. Without being asked, he began “teaching and correcting” my French in an unsolicited and somewhat patronizing manner after noticing a word printed on my sweatshirt — something I neither requested nor appreciated. He then proceeded to ask where I was from. As an Asian female, this made the interaction even more uncomfortable.
I am not sure whether he intended to be rude or was simply lacking awareness, but his behavior felt inappropriate and not aligned with the standard of service expected in a fine dining restaurant.

We visited Le Colonial on Valentine’s Day with reservations and high expectations, but the evening felt uneven. We were initially seated in a less desirable area and later moved, then informed that only a preset menu was available, which was disappointing for a first visit.
The sea bass was excellent and the oysters were a highlight, though it was surprising that we could not order additional oysters, even when a neighboring table asked as well. Service felt rushed and required repeated requests for small items, and the dessert presentation took place slightly behind us, making it difficult for everyone at the table to fully enjoy it.
An automatic 20 percent gratuity was added for our party of two. While we absolutely believe in tipping, the service did not reflect that level. The manager was pleasant, listened attentively, and adjusted it, which we appreciated. However, when the corrected receipt was returned, it was placed down in a noticeably irritated manner by our waiter.
The most disappointing part of the evening came at the end. Standing in the rain waiting for valet assistance, I could not help but feel overlooked and unwelcome, as if my presence and my patronage carried less value. I had to request the umbrella as others did not need to ask. In a space where hospitality should feel effortless and inclusive, leaving without even the basic courtesy of an umbrella left a lasting impression that no guest should walk away with.

Good ambiance. Good service. The food was good but a little overpriced. Not a great bargain for your money. Good for a romantic date, though.

The service was terrible!! Thank you Paul for not apologizing! Don’t come to them for any celebration or surprise events!! The downstairs lobby will judge like it’s the 60s!

The server spilled my Coke, and some of it splashed on me. 🥤😡 To make matters worse, there was a large roach right next to my table. 🪳 I reported both issues to management. The manager offered to pay for my cleaning bill, but only after I had my dress cleaned. He then asked if there was anything else he could do. I requested that my meal be covered, but he shook his head no and said he would only remove the drinks from the bill. 😫
The customer service was horrible. I was extremely disappointed with the lack of accountability. He even excused the roach by saying it was because we were seated on the outdoor patio. The worst part was that he didn’t properly remove the roach—he simply kicked it out of the way, and it remained visible. 🤦🏽♀️
Overall, this was a very disappointing and unprofessional experience.

Overall, it was a pleasant experience, though I left feeling like I need a second visit to fully form my opinion.
Food:
We ordered the papaya salad, red snapper, sea bass, fried rice, and the mixed seafood in the bouillabaisse. The papaya salad was bright and refreshing — a great way to start the meal. Both the red snapper and sea bass were well prepared and flavorful, with the sea bass being the standout for me in terms of texture and richness. The seafood bouillabaisse was generous and satisfying.
The only miss for me was the fried rice. It included sausage and possibly chicken — which I didn’t realize beforehand. I personally prefer fried rice with just egg and vegetables, so that one was more of a preference issue than a quality issue (and I’ll take responsibility for not ordering or reading the menu 😅).
Service:
Our waiter and the manager were both polished and professional. However, the front-of-house experience felt noticeably less warm. It wasn’t unkind, but it didn’t match the level of hospitality I expect at this price point.
Ambiance:
The space is beautiful — elegant décor, thoughtfully designed, and very much in line with the River Oaks setting. That said, it leans more formal than casual. I was dressed down and definitely felt it. It carries a refined, upscale energy that may feel a bit intimidating if you’re not dressed for the occasion. But one thing I strongly believe in is being yourself so do what feels right for you! 😅
$$:
At around $75 per person, this is firmly in the upscale category. The pricing aligns with the River Oaks location and elevated Vietnamese concept, though I’d want a slightly more seamless front-of-house experience to feel it fully justified.
I’ll likely return to try a few more dishes before making a final call.
Apologies, my pictures were weak. I was really tired 🫣

I went for the Valentine’s Day special dinner ($125 is not worth it for the quality) and was honestly a little disappointed with the quality of the 3-course menu compared to their regular menu.
I have been come here for 4 years, so I know their usual standards and how good their food can be. That’s why I had high expectations for a special occasion like Valentine’s Day.
Unfortunately, the courses felt rushed and not as well-prepared as their normal dishes. The presentation was nice, but the taste and overall quality didn’t match what I’ve experienced here in the past.
I truly hope this was just a one-time issue due to the holiday rush. This place has always been known for great quality of food, and service, and I’d love to see them keep that reputation.

We are regular customers and have always enjoyed dining here, which makes this experience even more disappointing. We came for the Valentine’s pre-fixe menu and unfortunately felt it was not worth the price at all.
With surcharge and service charges included, our total came out to about $400.We understand and fully accept the service charge — that part is completely fair. However, the additional surcharge felt unclear and unnecessary, especially given the overall value of the meal.
For $125 per person, we expected a much more refined and memorable menu. The appetizers were very small and lacked the depth of flavor we normally get from the regular menu. The main courses felt rushed and underwhelming — the portions were modest and the preparation didn’t feel special or elevated for a holiday pre-fixe experience. The protein quality and presentation did not match the premium price point. Some dishes tasted average rather than signature or chef-driven. It felt more like scaled-down versions of regular items instead of thoughtfully designed Valentine’s specials.
The only standout course was the dessert — it was well balanced, nicely presented, and genuinely enjoyable. Unfortunately, one good dessert is not enough to justify the full cost of the experience.

We went for the Valentine’s Day prix fixe menu and it was extremely underwhelming and disappointing. The table we had was wobbly and the food was very lackluster. The service and dessert were the only good part of the night. Do not recommend this restaurant. If I could , I would definitely would have liked a refund . Not worth spending $300 for forgettable food.

I’m extremely disappointed with my experience here on Valentine’s Day. My girlfriend and I came in for lunch and were treated in a way that felt racially discriminatory. Several waiters walked past us, avoided eye contact, and made no effort to take our order, even while serving people who arrived after us. It was humiliating and unacceptable.
The only person who showed any professionalism was the bartender, who stopped what he was doing and took our order when no one else would. After that, a server came over and apologized and offered a complimentary dish and dessert. While I appreciate the apology, it doesn’t erase how we were treated in the first place. No one should have to feel ignored or singled out just to get basic service.
Restaurants should be places where everyone feels welcome. What we experienced was the opposite. Management seriously needs to address how customers are treated, because this was one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had.

I’m no stranger to food steeped in history and soul, places that don’t just serve you dinner but transport you somewhere else entirely. At Le Colonial, that journey begins the moment you step off the sidewalk and into a dining room that feels like Saigon as dreamed by a French novelist: graceful, warm, and just a touch impatient for you to relax and let go.
From the first bite, it’s clear this is not your run-of-the-mill pho shop or barbecue joint. The kitchen here moves with purpose and precision. Dishes arrive served at just the right temperature, a deceptively simple detail that many restaurants still get wrong, but here, it matters; it tells you they care. The flavors are layered, balanced, evocative: bright citrus, herbaceous mint and cilantro, tempered heat, and that ineffable hint of nostalgia that good Vietnamese cuisine carries when done right.
The decor is a story in itself: French Colonial elegance with an old-world tropical twist. Wicker, greenery, soft lighting, and high ceilings make the space feel at once luxurious and welcoming, like drinking a well-made martini on the veranda of some long-forgotten Indochinese villa. It’s a setting designed for lingering, for conversation, and yes, for cocktails. On that note: the bar is no afterthought. Order two well-crafted drinks here and you’ll feel it; not because they’re overproof, but because they’re good. A third might find you reevaluating your life choices at the valet stand.
The menu thoughtfully bridges French technique and Vietnamese soul from crisp, satisfying small plates that set the tone to mains that sing with depth and grace. Whether you’re on a date night or entertaining clients over business lunch, this is a place that respects the moment. The pace of service finds that sweet spot between relaxed and professional, giving you space without ever letting the table grow cold.
Sure, you can go to Houston’s International District or the Alief/Bellaire corridors and find some truly excellent Vietnamese classics for less. But what Le Colonial offers is something elevated: it’s not just food, it’s an experience: a well-designed, beautifully executed one. It doesn’t replace a bowl of pho at a tucked-away neighborhood haunt any more than a Bordeaux replaces an everyday table wine Both have their place, and both deserve respect.
Will it be your everyday carry-out spot? Probably not. But as a destination, a place to remember and return to, Le Colonial earns its stars. Elegant, thoughtful, and unapologetically joyous in its celebration of flavor and hospitality, this is a Houston restaurant that doesn’t just serve great food, it invites you to savor life a little slower.
