What a hidden gem! Tex Chick is a queer owned, woman owned, fantastic Puerto Rican restaurant. If you want homestyle Caribbean comfort food, definitely go check it out. And they speak great English so don’t feel worried about going if you’re not a Spanish speaker!

I finally had the pleasure of checking out Tex-Chick Eatery, a family-owned Puerto Rican restaurant that’s been serving the community since 1982, now lovingly run by Titi Marilu and Titi Grace.
From the moment I stepped into this cozy spot, I instantly felt like I was back home in Puerto Rico. Just like our island - it’s small, but filled with a huge heart. We chatted with them about our families, childhood memories, and how happy we are that they’ve kept our culture alive right here in the Montrose area of Houston.
It’s a counter-service eatery, where you can see all the freshly prepared dishes right in front of you. You truly can’t ask for better service — if there’s something you’re craving that’s not in the menu and they have time, they’ll gladly make it for you! That’s the kind of warmth and hospitality that makes this place so special.
We enjoyed a true Puerto Rican feast: arroz con gandules, pernil, mofongo con camarones al ajillo, pollo frito, empanadas de yuca y masa, flan de coco, limber de guanábana, and of course, more food to take home because we couldn’t have it all at once! My personal highlight? The limber with traditional flavors. Limbers definitely took me back to childhood.
Prices are very reasonable, college students even get 10% off, parking can be a bit tricky, and they’re closed Sunday through Tuesday — but trust me, it’s absolutely worth planning your visit.
Let’s keep our culture thriving. Support our local Puerto Rican businesses.

The food was amazing! The pastelillos con carne, mouth watering, reminds me of Bronx, NY. Arroz con gandules was the best I've ever tasted. I really enjoyed mofongo con camarones and limber (Puerto Rican icee).

I have visited twice with the new owner and I have to say that is not the same. The ambiance is great and it looks better inside but the food is nowhere like with the previous owner. I have rice and beans with pastelon the first time and rice and beans with biftec the second time. Is missing flavorand is very bland, I didn't feel the Puerto Rican gusto. They really have to get better with the food.

Went back after the new owners took over and am so glad. Everything tasted great and service was great, too. Had the fricasé de pollo with arroz y habichuelas and it brought back so many memories of my mom’s fricasé. Will keep visiting!
