Asters is… just ok. The food itself is pretty good, but so simple I could make them at home (and do). $17 for a very simple meal on a paper plate is just not appealing to me. I’d rather put the meals together myself at home. Vegan options are clearly marked on the menu, which is nice. I had a breakfast plate the first time I came here and the scramble was very soft and pretty spicy, but yummy. I wish there was a bigger portion. I think it’s already seasoned with the green salsa, so I wouldn’t recommend paying extra for salsa unless you like really spicy food. The vegan seed bread it came with was dry and seemed really not fresh. It was pretty disappointing. I didn’t take a picture of this meal unfortunately. The second time I came, I got the hummus plate. The hummus and bread seemed fresh and homemade. The other ingredients were pretty simple and raw. It was tasty and more filling than the scramble dish, but the price is just too high for me to want to come back. I did really like the friendliness towards kids. They have some crayons and coloring books there and we were offered a cookie for the little one, though we politely declined because they didn’t have any vegan baked goods.

Really cute joint with friendly staff, we had the hummus everything bagel with tomato and cucumber.. probably the best bagel I’ve ever had. Super salty and garlicky, such a great option! They also have oat milk for coffee

The guy at the front was beyond condescending. So outstandingly rude. Do not recommend unless you get off on being spoken down to...

First let me say my family is from Marfa from way way back in the 1800s. I still have a lot of family who live there today. We were visiting from New Mexico and decided to stop in for a quick breakfast before we left. I was actually warned by a few locals not to eat here but we just needed to eat before hitting the road and this
was the first place we saw open on a Sunday. Should have listened. The minute we walked in we were not even greeted and the owner or whoever was at the front was super rude and seemed like we were bothering him. He just stared at us while we ordered. I ordered hot tea and it looked like it pained him to tell me what kind of tea was available. I chose the earl grey with cream. He pointed over to the table and said “ you can add it over there” it was so filled with water to the very top and a tea bag thrown in that btw, was not earl grey but some lemon tea, that when I went to add cream not only was there none left “over there” but I burned my hand quite badly with how full he had filled the cup. The prices are horrendous for a simple bagel and cream cheese and it took 30 minutes for them to toast and spread the cream cheese on the bagel. The guy at the front acted pretentious and unwelcoming. Would definitely not recommend going there. This is Marfa, a small town known for people being down to earth and friendly, not New York. Be nice to your customers.

I've stayed and dined in Marfa several times over the last 13 years. Considering the challenging desert economy and logistics, restaurants come and go. I've learned that eating out experiences everywhere in the Big Bend, including Marfa, are either beyond expectation and deliver value for money, or you feel like you've been taken. Unfortunately, it was the latter yesterday. $14 for two fried eggs, undercooked potatoes with barely a hint of the jalapeno, onion, and cilantro that was supposed to accompany, and a horrible-looking scoop of half an avocado thrown onto a paper plate, with jam, but no toast (forgotten). When asked if the eggs benedict was available, the person behind the order counter responded abruptly with "Not yet." Not yet? As in for another minute? Hour? Day? Never? - What kind of response is that to a customer who lined up promptly at 9 am on the recommendation to order the eggs benedict? I would gladly pay the $14 for friendly service, presentation, and attention to detail, not to mention tasty and properly cooked food. Didn't get it here. I hope they fix their issues.

Upon my numerous and most remarkable sojourns across the vast expanse of the continental United States, traversing from sea to shining sea, I have had the distinct privilege of partaking in the offerings of many an establishment, yet never, I daresay, have I encountered one so wholly exceptional in its culinary refinement and unparalleled service. The like of this establishment, in its devotion to the art of dining and hospitality, remains unequaled in my experience. I had the fortune of meeting a man whose presence was nothing short of a revelation. His name was Phoenix, and it was he who, with the most gracious and unassuming of smiles, demonstrated that this hallowed place was not merely a provider of sustenance to the body, but a sanctuary for the soul. His warm and genial countenance, imbued with an unmistakable sincerity, belied the modesty of his station, and in his company, the wearied traveler might find not only nourishment for the body, but solace for the spirit. Indeed, it became abundantly clear that this establishment, with its elegant surroundings and attentive service, was far more than a mere refuge for the hungry—it was a veritable oasis, a hallowed retreat where weary souls, burdened by the relentless and treacherous journey that is the human condition, could find a temporary reprieve from the vicissitudes of life. Here, one could partake not only in exquisite fare but in the warmth of human kindness, that rarest of gifts, which has the power to restore and uplift the heart.”

Highly overpriced for what you’re getting:

undercooked bacon, cooks who touch raw meat, then touch other kitchen items without changing their gloves and/or washing their hands (therefore not vegetarian/ vegan-friendly), and your order messed up. Also, hair in your food if you like that kind of thing.

Overall, the experience was crappy. Why this place is reviewed highly is beyond me.

This place is a gem. Everyone in town knows that it’s the place for a great breakfast/brunch, but don’t sleep on the evening menu, it’s small and curated and everything is prepared with quality ingredients and the upmost skill and care. Excellent food with excellent service. Highly recommended.

On a quick stop through Marfa on our way to visit family in El Paso, we stopped to have brunch at Asters Cafe & Bakery. We came mainly b/c our little picky eater likes pancakes & we saw Asters had them on their menu.

It’s tiny & quaint and the food was delicious! My husband & I both had different variations of eggs Benedict. His had salmon & mine had bacon. My son’s pancakes were a little toasty but still good & tasted almost like French toast.

We’ll stop again on our next visit!
