Nice place. Solid BBQ. Great service. Might have been an old LJS but now it’s a clean, family run bbq restaurant. I’m glad I stopped here on my way through Palestine. Well worth the time. I enjoyed it.

Im a little disappointed in my Stephans sandwich. It was just okay. The bun was soft and flavorful and the sausage and brisket were good but the pork was so dry and there wasn't enough sauce to help it. Also dont even bother putting coleslaw on the sandwich if you're only going to give me a tablespoon of it. Couldn't even tell if it was good or not becuz it got lost in the sandwich.

Ok...so I can't really judge the atmosphere, but the wife picked up so bbq to-go, and it was pretty good, for the price, there was plenty of food inside the plate,..unsure of the macaroni shells for Mac and cheese, but good..and the brisket was good..now the wife had the tricky sliced turkey, even the best can still make it dry, surprisingly it was very good...now why only 4 stars..the cobblers last few bites...you could definitely taste salt, I still ate it though.

Nice family run restaurant! The service was excellent, the place was clean, but the best part was the food! We had ribs, brisket, jalapeno sausage and peach cobbler. It was all great, it's pretty close to home and we'll definitely go back again.

Restaurantji Recommends
I wanted to like Happy Trails BBQ. Let me tell yall why it made me unhappy. First, the portion sizes are ridiculously small. Smallest out of every BBQ restaurant I've ever been to. Second, while the meat flavor was ok, sides were sub par at best.
My favorite food is BBQ. The BBQ here is better than Franklin's in Austin and you don't have the wait. As far as the portions are concerned I don't see how anyone could leave without a full belly. I generally order the pulled pork but it is all great. Do yourself a huge favor and try it. Bob

Best barbecue in East Texas. Highly recommend and such friendly staff. Will be stopping in more!!
We stopped at Happy Trails Barbecue while passing through Palestine, TX and were impressed! The moist brisket was outstanding, ribs were a hit with the kids, and the sausages were flavorful but not too spicy. Pulled pork was solid, and the sauce tied it all together.
Clean, rustic vibe and great prices—especially for prime brisket. Worth the stop!
