Fred’s Downtown Philly makes one of the best cheesesteaks I’ve had, hands down. The steak is chopped perfectly — tender, juicy, and packed with flavor — not dry, not greasy, just right. Every bite is loaded with well-seasoned meat that tastes like it’s been cooked fresh to order. The cheese melts all the way through instead of just sitting on top, coating the steak so you get that rich, creamy bite every single time. The roll deserves its own praise too — soft enough to soak up all the flavor, but sturdy enough to hold everything together without falling apart halfway through. Nothing feels skimpy or rushed. It’s hot, messy in the best way, and completely satisfying from the first bite to the last. If you’re getting a cheesesteak, Fred’s absolutely needs to be on your list.

The food itself is good, but the customer service is absolutely unacceptable. I encourage everyone to read the most recent review from Regina and, more importantly, the owner’s response to it. That reply says everything you need to know about where the real problem lies.
As customers, we expect basic respect. The owner’s comments make it clear that they do not believe the customer is ever right—and that attitude shows. Publicly responding to reviews in that manner is unprofessional and off-putting.
I used to drive 45 minutes just to eat here. After seeing how customers are spoken to and treated, I will not be returning. Good food does not excuse poor leadership or disrespectful customer service.
I have eaten here many times and have had no major issues before but on 1/10/26 when I ordered my usual #2 with no onions (on the left) I got home to discover that it had been made on, what appears to be, a hot dog bun? Like if you had run out your usual bread, that’s fine, you can tell me that when I come to pick up my order. What you should not have done is charge me the same as a full size sandwich when this is definitely not a full size sandwich, and certainly not the full size sandwich amount of meat and cheese so you scammed me out of my hard earned money. If I had never been ordered here before or just ordered this sandwich alone, you might have been able to pull one over on me. However, I’ve been a customer for years and I ordered sandwiches for my whole family (who’s sandwiches were all made on the normal sized bread btw so it was incredibly easy to tell that mine was vastly smaller) so I am just incredibly disappointed to be so let down by a business I have enjoyed so much up until this point. It’s a real shame.
Follow-up post business response: Fred should have never let it out the store in such poor quality. Really shows the downfall in overall customer service that a once good business would rather blame the customer than admit they’re obviously cutting corners and hoped no one would notice.
