I want to start by saying I genuinely support small businesses and family owned places. That matters to me, and I do not enjoy leaving negative reviews. That said, this experience at McCain’s Bakery and Cafe in Salado was so disorganized and disappointing that an honest review has to reflect it.
We came in on a Sunday morning feeling hopeful. The outdoor patio is a great space, and it looks like the kind of place that should be a solid breakfast stop. Unfortunately, once we sat down, we were basically forgotten. Our coffee was never refilled while we waited, and the waitress did not come back to check on us until the food finally arrived more than 30 minutes later. In the meantime, I had to go inside to get my own coffee. She also never seemed very awake or engaged, and that showed in how little attention our table got.
When the food finally arrived, the value did not match the price. The all American breakfast was $15, and the portion was surprisingly small. It was not enough food for what we paid, even before considering how long we waited. To be fair, the biscuits and gravy I ordered were good, and there was a scrambled dish at the table that was also good. The food itself was not the problem across the board.
We also had a basic order mistake with the toast. We asked for whole grain, but we were given white. When we brought it up, we had to push back multiple times because she insisted it was whole grain when it clearly was not. Eventually, she brought out a biscuit as a make good and said she would not put it on the ticket. Then, at checkout, the biscuit was on the ticket anyway, and she expected us to pay for it. Only after we pointed it out again did they acknowledge the mistake and remove it. At that point, it just felt like a pattern of confusion and poor follow through.
Between the inattentive service, the long wait, the portion size, and the price, this was a 1 out of 5 experience for me, which I have never given before. I hate to say it, but I do not recommend it.

Love the food: chicken salad and baked potato salad are worth a 3-5 hr drive to get there. Pies are good too (homemade chocolate and coconut cream). People are friendly. We go to Salado just for this place.

I've recently moved to Salado and try to come every Thursday after church. The breakfast is delicious, the lattes are perfect and the owner and staff are the best. Everyone is so friendly and inviting.

Service is always good, as is the food! I was a little disappointed that there was no fire in the fireplace.

Great little restaurant providing a variety of breakfast, lunch, and bakery items. I ordered half a chicken salad sandwich on dourdough bread with potato salad as a side. The bread was fresh and sandwich tasty. The potato salad was good but not as flavorful as I would have liked. I ordered coconut cream pie and, being a bit of a coconut cream pie snob, was disappointed that the pie was topped with meringue rather than fresh cream. Nonetheless, it was tasty so if you like meringue by all means order it! I arrived near closing time mid week and received great service.
Good staff, great food!

I do not have one complaint about this establishment!
We found that this place was right off I-35 service road. I called ahead to ask if I could put my name down to get a table, and the sweet hostess was able to accommodate.
Wait was not long at all!
Service was great, and the food was amazing and hot. I absolutely adored all the staff there. If you're hungry, and in Salado for breakfast, I totally recommend this place. Definitely get the biscuits (yummy)!!!
