I heard from a customer at my job that Brown was a cool place to chillax. So I checked it out and they seemed so pretentious with the way the discussed their menu. If your menu is based on the pure flavor of coffee try to say that in a way that makes you seem not pretentious like "here at Brown our owner really has a passion for the pure flavor of coffee and so that's why our menu only has a few options, but if you give us a chance I'm sure you'll like whatever you order! My favorite is blah blah bc..." see. So easy. Also I went in once and the barista was so robotic and didn't smile or laugh or anything. It was really weird. Another barista came to me at my table and asked if I wanted to purchase any drinks. I was editing a video (not using WiFi bc it's software) and it was gonna take me a few hours. All I'd gotten so far was some water and planned to get something later. I told the barista "oh I'm okay for right now!" And he tells me in such a nasty tone "well our WiFi is for customers only! So you have to order something". Speechless. How effing rude when I had been a repeat customer. Never came after that. Only good barista there who was kind and helpful was the owner's son, I can't remember his name but yeah he deserves a raise compared to everyone else if you ask me. I think the owner has the right intentions and isn't trying to seem snobbish just wants people to have good coffee but the EMPLOYEES ruined my experience for me.

If you like speciality coffee then you will enjoy Brown! If you like to put cream and sugar in black coffee I would suggest going somewhere else. They do not have a "condiment" bar for people who like to do this. They do, however, make quality coffee and the baristas are very friendly! They are happy to help you decide your order and are not at all pretentious.

I've been here twice and both times I encountered the same barista. He is the rudest barista I have ever met and acted like I was inconveniencing him. He wouldn't look me in the eyes, had a nasty tone and I asked if I could get a splash of milk in my americano to which he said no because it's only served black. When I paid he just took my money without saying a word and waited for me to leave. Yes, the coffee is very good. But having two jobs dealing with customer service myself, I will not continue to go to a place that makes me feel uncomfortable as a customer. There are plenty of local coffee shops downtown that are just as good and have friendly faces that care about their customers.
