We came to Ruben because of it's reputation for being the best Tamales in San Antonio. During tamale season, this place has a line that starts very early in the morning with long wait. Luckily it's not the season, so no line. They gave us samples and they are in fact the best Tamales I've ever had. Maybe best in the world.
Best tamales in town! The pork w/ jalapeños is the best.
Native San Antonian here. Went there yesterday (Dec. 20, 2022) for the first time. Arrived at 7:30 AM. 25 people ahead of me. Line inside, to the door. Everyone chill. Counter ladies friendly and human. You can see into the back area where 6 women methodically assemble the Holy Tamales. Imagine just a larger scale operation of what your neighbor does in her kitchen every Christmas. The tamales are sold as fast as they come out of the kitchen. After an hour and 45 minutes, it was my turn! I bought 8 dozen plus a bright pink thermal carrying bag (the $10 bag is very reusable.) $119.08 total. The only available choice is Classic pork. Walk-in only. No real limit except your patience. And the tamales themselves? BEST TAMALES EVER! Super fresh and warm. Wonderfully flavorful pork filling and perfect masa in just the right ratio. At first, the tamales are so fresh that the masa is very delicate and breaks easily. But within an hour, the masa has reached the right firmness and Heaven Itself has arrived. Reheats perfectly. My wife and I gobbled down 5 apiece immediately and spent the rest of the day in a tamale coma. This is not a bad thing. If you don't like Ruben's then I feel bad for you.

We have been visiting Ruben’s for close to 20 years with each visit to San Antonio. Every time it is excellent!
When we moved here, we heard so much about how great the tamales were. They were good, but the last few years they've gone down hill quick! Not enough meat and way too much masa. The last two times we went, we had 1 tamale WITHOUT meat. Then, we had a tamale literally about 1/2 an inch. Can't believe they even bothered to put the husk on it. They are not consistent. Their prices went up but the quality went way down. Delia's is much better and the workers are much more friendlier! Adios Ruben's!
