We overheard the group ahead of us being asked if they had a reservation. They said no and left. When we stepped up, we said we did not have a reservation and asked if we could sit at the bar. We went to the bar but found no open seats. Before leaving, we checked OpenTable and saw that two reservations were still available. We booked an 8:00 reservation through the app. When we returned to the host stand, the hostess accused us of “gaming the system.” She still seated us but told us we needed to be finished within an hour because they were closing. Shortly after we sat down, the manager came to our table and asked how we were able to book. That was when we were told there was a private party at 10:00 and that reservations were unavailable. We had not been told this beforehand. After we showed that we booked legitimately through the app, he said he was frustrated with OpenTable but allowed us to stay. Our server, however, was very kind and professional. Unfortunately, the food was bland and my drink was not good. We were disappointed by how we were treated by the hostess and manager for something that was not our fault and will not be returning.
Excellent spot to grab a drink and food with friends! Highly recommended for anyone looking for something on the River Walk, but not the usual tourist trap. Go! You won't regret it!
We had a fantastic time! The drinks are always good and food tasty. Every time we go it feels like stepping back in time.
We had an hour wait for a table as the hostess said she didn't have our reservation on her end. Then once seated it took another 50min to get food. Which was a French dip that was cold served with AuJus that was flavorless colored water. Also cold. Thinking perhaps they ran out and tried to make something at the last minute. The hamburger we ordered was greasy and way under cooked. And for an additional $4 you can add French fries to your meal which we did and they were so soggy and limp it was so disappointing and by this time we were starving. Didn't return the meals because we didn't want to wait another extended amount of time to redo. Our server never came back to ask how things were and actually someone else ended up checking us out. Very disappointing experience.
Food small poertions and service 3 out of ten nor recommended
AMAZING experience!!! We only discovered The Esquire about 3 years ago, and it is our absolute favorite place to go when we're in San Antonio!!! The atmosphere is incredible!!! The food and drinks are always great!!!! The service is phenomenal!!! Don't miss your chance to check out The Esquire next time you visit San Antonio.
we had a great time on New Year's Eve. We arrived a little early for a reservation, but was able to get a table. The hostess was lovely as was our waitress. The food was great. The deviled eggs were recommended to us by our daughter and she was right... they were great!
We ate here on a weekday evening. The food was very good. Burger was great, fries were seasoned well, quail was delicious, and the drinks were tasty. However, the service was slow to start and not very helpful. Also, the restaurant was very dark. We had to turn our phone lights on to read the menus. I lightened the photos so you can see the inside. There are two entries to the place, one in the street side and one on the Riverwalk side (pictured). It's got a vibe, and the food is good, just not for us.

Its an ok place I guess, the drinks aren't very well balanced, the french dip was almost inedible, it had SOO much horseradish on it that we had to scrape it off to eat it. The pop up is cute and the bartenders there were great but thats the pop up. The bar itself is nothing to write home about

Grabbed dinner before going to the holiday bar downstairs. Dark theme to match its prohibition era history. Great service.
Great spot; cool atmosphere. Daniel was very personable and struck up a conversation right away. The couple next to me came in to see Daniel so I thought they were locals but they were from out of town and wanted to say goodbye to him. That says something.
Always an amazing experience no matter how many people are there. Service spot on and fast, friendly. The downstairs however was a bit much and extremely pricey (but very good service and tastey drinks).
Daniel was an amazing bartender
