While visiting my hometown, I wanted to take my mother somewhere new—specifically a place neither of us had visited before. Over time, I’ve saved numerous restaurants across the U.S. on Google Maps based on recommendations and reviews I’ve come across online, and this was one of them. I honestly couldn’t remember exactly what initially caught my attention about it, but I intentionally walked in without expectations or bias.
One thing to note right away: this is not your traditional San Antonio Tex-Mex fare. Those expecting the familiar Tex-Mex staples may want to adjust their expectations. The menu leans toward authentic Mexican cuisine, offering a broad selection of entrées that made choosing somewhat difficult.
My mother was slightly disappointed to find that carne asada and carne guisada were not on the menu, so she opted for something familiar—one of her personal favorites, chicken mole. The dish was served with rice, charro beans, and tortillas.
Wanting to explore something different, I ordered the huarache with bistek. The dish arrived as a large oval-shaped masa base—similar in style to a sope—generously topped and served as a standalone entrée without sides.
To begin, we shared the guacamole, accompanied by the complimentary chips and salsa. The guacamole was clearly fresh, though I personally tend to prefer a touch of lemon and garlic in the mix. This version was instead topped with pico de gallo, giving it a bright, fresh finish. The chips were hearty and crunchy—well prepared—though thicker than my personal preference, as I tend to favor a thinner style.
My huarache arrived first. Given its generous size, I found it easiest to cut it into quarters before diving in. The dish was flavorful and satisfying, dressed similarly to a sope with a well-balanced combination of toppings. The beans were slightly thinner in consistency than I typically prefer, but they carried good flavor.
My mother’s chicken mole followed, coated in a lightly sweet mole sauce and finished with sesame seeds. The chicken itself was tender, moist, and well seasoned throughout. Paired with the rice and charro beans, it made for a comforting and satisfying plate.
Just as we were preparing to pay, I remembered seeing a review mentioning their conchas. I initially thought of ordering two to take home, but learned they are served in an order of four. We decided to take them to go—though in hindsight, that would have been a mistake.
These conchas deserve to be enjoyed immediately.
They arrived warm, accompanied by a small bowl of hot Abuelita chocolate for dipping and a separate bowl of lightly sweetened, airy cream. On a cool evening after the rain, it was the perfect finish to the meal. Dipping the warm conchas into the rich hot chocolate and topping them with a spoonful of the fluffy cream was simply outstanding. Despite already feeling full, we somehow managed to enjoy every bite.
The staff was warm and welcoming, and on a quiet Sunday evening the atmosphere felt calm and relaxed—an ideal setting to unwind and enjoy a leisurely meal.
If you’re looking for authentic Mexican flavors and a memorable dessert, this is certainly a spot worth visiting—especially for the conchas.

Coming from Arizona, I had very high expectations of the Mexican food in San Antonio. I was very disappointed with all the Tex-mex options, until I found Tlahco. This place has honestly been one of the best parts of moving to San Antonio. My husband and I eat here at least once a week and we can’t get enough of it. The service is impeccable and the food is always scrumptious. We have never had one bad experience and are so thankful to have this place not too far from our house.

Marianna might be the most technically sound server I’ve ever met. She met every single point of service while keeping a huge smile on her face. The food matched the quality of service. There is nothing more that I can say.
