This morning was a wonderful step back in time. Jennifer, our waitress, was genuinely kind and hospitable. The entire staff was gracious. The food was delicious and quickly arrived to our table. We will definitely return and highly recommend others to go out of their way to enjoy this piece of Texas history!
Food was okay, good coffee, good service. This was suggested by hotel staff. I had simple eggs and bacon. My husband had biscuits and gravy (he said they were okay) with hash browns
... and we're not breaking it any time soon. Any trip to San Antonio is full of history, but many overlook the German history of San Antonio. Schilo's is a uniquely German restaurant and bakery that has been here for over 100 years. Start your day with a hearty breakfast of pancakes, eggs, and meats, you can even have a German bier with it if you want. They people are friendly and the food is delightful. Not many places rate a 5 star on my reviews, but Schilo's hits all 3 criteria of food, friendliness, and atmosphere in my book... another plus, it's not an overhyped chain restaurant.
We had a terrific breakfast there the other day. It's a marvelous old place with tons of character. We got there a few minutes after it opened on Sunday and it was almost full. We ordered a schnitzel with egg, it comes with hash browns and a biscuit & gravy. We also ordered a cream pancake and a potato pancake. We shared everything and it was more than enough for two people. The schnitzel was delicious, crisp & tasty. Egg was perfect. biscuit was light as a feather. The cream and potato pancakes were marvelous too. The hash browns were average, but nothing special. I'd have loved to have tasted their home made Root Beer but I gave up sugar a few years ago. Maybe next time I can have a sip or two as Root Beer has been a favorite of mine forever. I'd also love to try their Reuben with their home made mustard too. Next time we'll go for lunch. This is a place that's definitely worth a visit!
We loved everything about Schilo's, from the atmosphere or decor to the food to the service (thank you Jennifer!). We had a 15-20 minute wait the first day we went, but it was well worth the wait. The omelets were loaded and very good; just an enjoyable experience all around.
Waited over 45 minutes for my food and it was cold when I got it they comped an order of Bacon when they delivered it thinking it may make up for it? I guess they assume since I am a Big guy Bacon will pacify a person? I certainly did not ask for it. I should have known when it took 20 minutes to get coffee and water what I was getting into. I was literally the first person in the restaurant and 3 tables were done and left before I got my food just rediculous!
Been here several times, but always a welcome stop. Lots of choices and breakfast items all way. Large beautiful and wonderful cinnamon rolls and pastries. I tried the breakfast of eggs, german sausage, hash browns. Came with wonderful rye bread toast. Also the star was a potato pancake with sour cream and home made applesauce. Wonderful, just wonderful. Kind and helpful hostess and super animated and friendly server Josef. Thank you so much for making our breakfast there this day a memorable one.
This is an amazing restaurant, we've been coming here since 2007 to enjoy Dia de los muertos. We come to this restaurant for every morning to eat breakfast. The atmosphere, food and service is always top quality! Ask for Jennifer at the bar ?
Food was fabulous! Sat at the bar and had great service. The spicy mustard has a strong horseradish kick but it was so good! Had split pea soup, chicken schnitzel, sauerkraut, German potato salad, grilled veggies and both sourdough and rye bread. All was amazing!
Very professionally manager kindly made up for our 40-minute wait for late lunch meals. But, having lived in Germany and eaten at many German restaurants in the USA, I am compelled to advise you that the food leaves much to be desired. Our server was inattentive. The overall cost for four of us was more than reasonable- very affordable. Sadly, the German potato salads were mushy and stuffed in a small bowl. The red cabbage was too thick and lacked the flavor that I find elsewhere. The wursts were bland; not enjoyable. On the good side their chocolate cake & cheese cakes were very good. They seem to have a good selection of libations. One of our group enjoyed the Reuben sandwich, apparently one of their specialties. Don’t expect much from the German dishes; stick with their sandwiches.

This was our second visit. AF Family here. We love this place. Very hearty breakfast and great coffee. We love German food so we really enjoyed Schilo's. Make sure you pop over to the trophy room.
This review is written from the viewpoint of prior visits to Schilo's, pre-pandemic. We've always made it a point to eat here at least once during our many vacation trips to San Antonio, always staying on the Riverwalk. This time, we had two breakfast visits and two lunch visits. Compared to what we remembered from a couple dozen meals in the past, this was just deflating. The Good: Still a very nice environment. Breakfast eggs, over easy for me and over medium for my wife were perfect both visits, to the point where we asked our server to give the chef a compliment from us. While over easy is, well, easy, it seems no one can do over medium. My wife was thrilled. Pancakes, too, filled the bill, being sweet and creamy just as the menu said. Delicious! Lunch sides of German potato salad and red cabbage were superb. The schweineschnitzel, too, was delectable. Too bad gravy is extra cost... The Disappointing: Breakfast ham and the ham sandwich were served with one razor thin piece of meat, to the point of feeling like we were being ripped off. Sandwiches at this place used to have a good 3/4 inch of meat on them. Now, the meat is 1/16 and the bread is more like 1.5 inches. Their website still shows Reubens and other sandwiches generously full of meat, kraut, cheese, etc. That is NOT what I was served. I understand higher food costs now, but really? You know their regulars have noticed the huge reduction. Oh, and what they like to call rye bread IS NOT rye, it's pumpernickel, with all its dryness and crumbliness on full display. Likewise, breakfast hash browns were anything but, being white, limp, and cold. They're called hash BROWNS for a reason. Toast was always served dry, and the servers do a poor job of making sure each table has margarine or butter handy. Finally, one morning we were seated opposite the pastry case, so we took home a couple of Danish for later. Tough, dry, and hardly any icing drizzle, again, not worth paying $5 each for. The only thing making them palatable at all was the filling. I'm a retired research baker and I know good baked goods. Not this stale stuff. A Shining Star! The shining star here, though, was Estela, our server for three of the four meals. What a great experience! Each visit we were treated to another round of true Texas hospitality. Super! We also had Joseph as our server the first visit, and while a bit pushy, he was OK. But...Don't let him refill your root beer mug when you've drunk only half of it. The menu says one refill free, and that extra half-mug, I'm sure, is what the owner defines as a refill. Nope. Get your two full mugs, even if you have to stand your ground. You're paying for two, so get them! The Bottom Line: Would we go back in the future? I honestly don't know. Going to Schilo's used to be automatic, but these four trips have kind of ruined the place for us. I genuinely dislike writing negative reviews, but the difference from the past is just too great. Game-time decision, as they say...
A little slice of history at this restaurant right in the center of the action in San Antonio. We try to get here often when we are in town.. Amazing pastries, wonderful potato latke pancakes with great house made applesauce. The service is always great. Specific shout out to Jennifer, who is the perfect blend of efficient, friendly, and above all kind. If everyone was like her the world would be a much better place.
Avoid the tourist traps and head straight to this restaurant. In addition to German specialties, they serve typical “American “ fare. I really enjoyed the latkes (potato pancakes), and the bacon is the best restaurant bacon I have eaten in a while. Highly recommended.
This must be the best restaurant in San Antonio. We really enjoyed reasonably priced the food at breakfast, service and atmosphere at Shilo's (pronounced "Shee-los"). Close to the Riverwalk, you can eat then wander along the river. We had Poppa Fritz breakfast with a side of gravy. The staff are all friendly, supportive of special diets (eggs can be fried in (real) butter in a special pan, as can breakfast potatoes) and the extra things like grainy mustard and pea soup in a jar fixins are a great momento to take home. Don't forget to take home the most delicious cheesecake slice (or whole pie) you have ever tasted. Snack time while watching tv.) From the Hotel Valencia it is downhill but coming home you may walk off some breakfast calories if you go straight to the hotel.
