The food is delicious, period. I had chicken fried chicken which the menu describes as two thighs with gravy and two sides. Thought I'd have one for lunch and take one home...for $17, I was alright with that. When the plate arrived there was one thigh and my two sides. I asked about what the menu said vs what I received and was told when they first opened the thighs were very small and these aren't. Frankly, it was an average sized thigh and absolutely not worth $17. Other than steak, I believe it was the highest priced item on the menu, so I'd likely go back and try something else.
Edit - menu has been changed to reflect correct portions, still crazy good french fries!

I appreciate your quick response and your offer. Everyone has a bad day. I know how hard it is to own a small business and I respect the fact that you care and would like an opportunity to turn a poor experience into a good one. As you can see I have taken down the review and look forward to your invite to try again. We will take you up on it soon and hope to change the rating as well.

You have to try Sweet Tea's Country Fried Steak with brown gravy. l usually only eat half and save rest for later, but it was so flavorful I couldn't stop eating, yummy!😋 đŸ’—đŸ€—

3 people ordering at our table.
One ordered BLT and 2 ordered kids sliders. One without mustard or tomatoes the other with everything. 15 minutes after placing our order we were told they were out of bacon. When the sliders came out one order had only lettuce on it and one order had nothing. While our waitress was apologetic the kitchen seems to be clueless.
Definitely won’t be returning.

Great fresh food. Enjoyed chicken fried chicken, green beans, and sweet potato fries. Chicken fried chicken was fresh thighs, tenderized, battered, and fried. Green beans were fresh. Sweet potato fries were hand cut. Finished with banana pudding (had caramelized banana). I will be back.

I had been wanting to try this spot for a very long time and was VERY disappointed. We went in on a Friday evening around 8:15pm, it was busy but not too crazy. There were a bunch of tables that needed to be cleared and only one waitress working (so we thought). She told us to sit anywhere, there were very slim choices since all the tables were dirty. When the waitress came up and gave us our menus, asked about drinks we inquired about the drink options, she then asked if we wanted that menu
why wouldn’t you bring that too. The drink menu doesn’t show what beers are offered only the specialty drinks. We waited for her to come back to place a drink order
waited
waited and waited. There was a dad and son that came in, they sat down with no service after at least 10min then left. Around the same time they came in so did a family of 4. Keep in mind we are still waiting. The 4 top places a drink order, gets drinks, people are waiting for their tickets and she still hasn’t come back. I hear her rattle off this list of all the things they don’t have. I had to go up to the bar where she was to place our drink/appetizer order. After this another waitress appears from the back. We get our drinks and place our food order. We had been there at least 30min by this point. My drink order wasn’t correct, I flagged her down to let her know and just ordered a beer, she apologized and told me she didn’t make it. Not a huge deal. While still waiting on our food I got up to go to the bathroom and the waitress is behind the plastic curtain telling the kitchen staff how I was rude about the drink not being made right and that I stated I wasn’t going to pay for it (not true) and I’m just standing there listening to her go on and on. I went back to our table and told my friend we were leaving. I went back up to her, let her know she could cancel the order and I heard every word she said. She tried to defend herself but by this time I wasn’t having it. We had already been patient, kind and more than understanding. I gave her my debt card to pay for what we had, she took my 2nd drink off the tab too, I appreciate that since I didn’t drink that one either. She hands be the card and receipt and tells me she doesn’t expect a tip!!! I completely understand the industry and sometimes there are things out of your control but being rude and openly complaining about your customers is NOT acceptable. Also, being at a restaurant for an hour where I had to do the work to get the service I did receive is not how you run a business.

Sweet Tea CafĂ© – A Kind Welcome, But a Culinary Letdown

I always try to support local spots, especially those with a warm and welcoming atmosphere—and Sweet Tea CafĂ© absolutely delivers on hospitality. Our server was a true highlight of the experience: kind, attentive, and genuinely trying to make our visit enjoyable. She handled a complicated situation with grace and professionalism, which I deeply appreciated.

Unfortunately, the food itself was another story.

Our meal began with a rundown of items that were unavailable, which was a bit disappointing but understandable. We chose something from what remained, only to be told it, too, was not available—only to then be told moments later that it actually was. It was a bit confusing, but we rolled with it and appreciated the communication.

We ended up ordering the flatbread and grilled cheese. The flatbread arrived with almost no flavor—just a scant sprinkle of cheese and that was on only half the slices. Three pieces were entirely bare, and the marinara sauce tasted eerily similar to the kind you’d find in a kids’ pizza Lunchable. The grilled cheese was equally underwhelming, with so little cheese it was overshadowed by the tomato. It truly lacked the basics of what makes comfort food comforting.

I say this with no malice: this was, unfortunately, the worst food I’ve ever been served at a restaurant. The presentation, portioning, and flavors were simply not there. It felt like something went very wrong behind the scenes—perhaps a staffing or kitchen issue—but the food was not at all up to the standard one would expect.

I won’t be returning, and I wouldn’t recommend Sweet Tea CafĂ© until they address what seems to be a serious issue in the kitchen. That said, the front-of-house team deserves credit for their professionalism and kindness. I sincerely hope things turn around, because the people running the floor are doing a fantastic job.

Food & service were good. Salads were fresh and the chicken was marinated and juicy which was nice because so often chicken can be dry. Only place open with a full bar during the day in Smithville. Only complaint was the flies, but I understand sometimes those can be hard to control.

Find It and Fix It

I would drive out of my way to eat here. You can tell that they’re using fresh ingredients to make unexpectedly good food. I’ve eaten here twice, and have been delighted both times.
