Excellent Japanese food. My whole family enjoyed this and it’s right next to our condo.

Had to make sure to come on here and give credit for the great experience. My family and I were out in SP on a weekend trip and on Sunday night we began to search for restaurants to have dinner at and realized almost all of them closed at 9pm (it was almost 8:30). We came across Kohnami which closed at 9:30pm. We ended up arriving at 9pm, 30 minutes before closing, and we were treated as if they had just opened. Agustin immediately greeted us and welcomed us in. He had a great attitude the whole time and was very engaging and truly made us feel as if we were a special guest. The food was also great and had a lot of very good options ! Will definitely go back next time we’re there and hope to find more servers like Agustin!

our food was half-decent. we went there twice - our waitress the first night was exceptional and super kind, the second night the one we had was alright.
the problem is this - I am writing this from my condominium couch with the worst food poisoning I have ever had. my partner and i aren't very explorative eaters, and this was the only place I'd gone to out of my usual loop of restaurants that had never once given me food poisoning. I am 100% sure this restaurant was the culprit after reading other reviews.
please tread carefully.

Wow - serious upgrade in the quality of our server last night - Chris was attentive and polite. Best service we’ve had here in six years. New furniture and new menu, too.

Amazing experience at Kohnami
Alex was an amazing chef/entertainer
All 8 of us had an amazing evening at Kohnami
It was daughters 13th birthday and they definitely all made it extra special for her!!
💯 we will visit again when back in town.
We chose a variety of sushi, then steak, shrimp and chicken mixed with rice, veg and noodles on the grill.

We had the absolute best experience at Kohnami Teppanyaki for my daughter’s birthday! From start to finish, everything was top-notch.
Our chef, Alex, was a total class act — incredibly skilled, personable, and entertaining. He made the whole table laugh and wowed us with his cooking tricks while serving up some of the most delicious teppanyaki we’ve ever had. The steak and shrimp were cooked perfectly, and the fried rice was out of this world.
The entire staff went above and beyond to make the evening special.
They surprised my daughter with a birthday treat and made her feel so celebrated. The level of service, attention to detail, and friendly atmosphere truly stood out.
We left full, happy, and already planning our next visit. If you’re looking for an unforgettable dining experience, Kohnami Teppanyaki is the place to go — and definitely ask for Chef Alex!

Some of the best food I’ve encountered in general. It’s a plus that it happens to be on the island! A perfect spot to impress a date or your palate

Had dinner here on a Thursday night in the off season. I came because they have tofu! The menu has Asian dishes from Japan, China, Korea, and Thailand. I decided on the dolsot bibibap with tofu and veggies, no egg to make it vegan. Miso soup has shellfish so I skipped that but the house starter salad was easily vegan. My dish was delicious and I definitely had enough for leftovers. The staff and the owner were so kind and thoughtful. Highly recommend for vegans in South Padre!!

It’s the island, so of course it’s going to be overpriced, that part is expected. But the food here just doesn’t hold up. The sushi was fine, but not worth what they’re charging, especially when you can get far better quality in Brownsville just 15 minutes away. There’s a clear drop-off in standards once you hit the island, it’s like everything coasts on location instead of effort. Even the Kohnami in Harlingen felt fresher and better prepared, and that one wasn’t anything to write home about either. Comparison may be the thief of joy, but it’s hard not to notice when the difference is this obvious.

Overall disappointing experience, I ordered miso soup and LA roll to Go and mentioned to the server to not put avocado since i’m allergic to it. When I got back to the hotel I saw it had avocado in it, it was just disappointing I just had to throw them away, two stars because the miso soup was good.
I visited this restaurant with my African American friend and my homosexual cousin years ago. They both normally are quite adverse to Asian food and culture, but Kohnami made them feel welcome. The food was spectacular and the service was unmatched. The server even gave my cousin a kiss on the cheek!

Wow really good I ate here once and I really liked it, really good place 5 stars
Went on a Sunday afternoon for lunch and we were the only ones there although I’m unsure why because the food and service were amazing. My husband and I shared the monkey brain and tuna tataki appetizer & then shared a sushi boat. The price is fair for sushi/sashimi/nigiri and it was all fresh and delicious. Definitely recommend 😋
