As a regular customer at Escalante Outdoors, my experiences have literally always been positive. However, I recently encountered a situation that has left me feeling frustrated and disappointed.
For the past couple of months, I've visited the store almost daily for my coffee. However, I faced ongoing issues with their card reader, particularly when trying to pay via my virtual card (NFC) and with my tap on my physical card. On one occasion, after multiple unsuccessful attempts to process my payment, Linda kindly offered to put my order on a tab for the next day. I appreciated her willingness to help, and offer to do so. I didn’t ask for the tab.
Some time later, I did a coffee run for my coworkers, this time without my physical card, as I had switched vehicles. Unfortunately, the card reader again failed to accept my virtual card after several tries. When I explained my situation, Katie, the owner, responded dismissively. Although I proposed putting my order on a tab again, she agreed but did so with a condescending tone, suggesting it was problematic to hold tabs. Saying, “Let’s not make a habit of holding a tab.” Feeling uncomfortable, I offered to retrieve my card from my car, but she declined and made a remark about not wanting the drinks to melt.
The following day, my friends picked up our usual order, and it became evident that the staff, including Katie, were discussing our previous tab in a derogatory manner. An older gentleman even jokingly called out to my friend about the "tab," indicating that there was lingering tension. This behavior was surprising, especially given that I had only sought a solution to a technical issue.
As loyal customers who consistently pay and tip, it's disheartening to feel unwelcome after a minor inconvenience caused by their card reader. While I understand that managing a store comes with challenges, a more supportive and understanding approach would go a long way in maintaining customer relationship. I’m just surprised by the reaction of the staff about something as silly as a tab, when I willingly offered to go and grab my card before taking the drinks. Doesn’t seem like I could’ve done the right thing either way.

I cannot say enough good things about Jim’s shop and guiding. Jim and Ian showed my family the slot canyons, landscapes and history that made him fall in love with Escalante. They took great care of my kids and we felt safe and entertained the whole time. When we come back next year we will be back.

Jim was a fantastic guide -- he took me and my husband on a hike to remote secret slot canyons with no one around. Very knowledgeable about the area, its flora, fauna and geology. He helped us navigate the tricky spots with no issues. Highly recommend!
