I'm Canadian and have had my driver's license scanned in many places including Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Colorado, Texas, Idaho, and more. This is the only place that refused to attempt to scan it and demanded I produce a passport instead.
The bartender clearly thought I was dumb enough to believe this so I just rolled my eyes and left. Another place a block away scanned my driver's license without issue using the same machine and welcomed me in.
If you're going to be an unwelcoming prick, just put a sign on the door that says "locals only" instead of making up easily falsified lies and save us all the trouble.

I love this bar! The staff are Salt-of-the-Lake folks. The bathrooms leave you with all of your dignity when you've finished using them. Prices are relatively low. Selection is excellent. The room is clean and inviting. No presumptions. Everyone is welcome. GREAT BAR!
