I've been to this place on Friday and Saturday. Friday is a much better night. They have a decent crowd and karaoke runs smoothly. Saturday, on the other hand, is a letdown. Fewer people, and karaoke is not carried out well. For example, it's supposed to start at 9, but the Saturday night KJ showed up 20 minutes late, and they acted like it was normal. They took their sweet time to set things up, while doing other things. Despite making us wait, they chose to sing a song themselves. Customers didn't get to sing until 9:40. After witnessing this, I am not surprised that this place isn't successful on Saturday. People who enjoy karaoke go to karaoke because they want to sing, not to have their time wasted. 40 minute delay is 10 songs/customers that won't get to sing that night. People go to karaoke to enjoy singing with their friends, not to watch a KJ act like a diva and put on a show by singing after making us all wait. Blue Gene's isn't making the right business move here. If they are using karaoke to attract customers, then they need to provide experiences that karaoke goers are looking for. Instead, they get disappointed and stop coming. They'd be more successful if they hire a better KJ than the current KJ (Hysteria, I think).
Casual and super friendly, a spot you can feel at home! Excellent combo drinks and their own in house tonics

I found this to be an OK bar. It's rather small and narrow, so once it gets crowded, it becomes hard to navigate. Karaoke is rather disappointing. There's no good place to stand while you sing because the screen is directly across from the bar, so once the bar area is crowded with people ordering drinks, it's hard to sing without feeling like you are in people's way. It also doesn't help that it's right by the entrance. What's worse, their sound system is just awful. Muffled unclear sound, which makes it not very fun to sing. It's mostly young crowds in their 20s and 30s, FYI.
Greatest espresso martini on the planet, and the best place in SLC to be a regular at.

had fun until the karaoke announcer grabbed a mic to insert himself and joined every song if he knew it 😭 pick obscure songs so the karaoke announcer won’t steal your shine….he had a good voice but it really threw me off, my friend and i signed up and waited all night for our turn just for this dude to harmonize on top of our duet. really annoying
Enjoy a night at blue genes, however, customer service last night was not friendly in any respect to the word. The bartender with the black Bob could use a serious attitude adjustment especially if you’re working a Saturday night. It was good otherwise but the rude bartender trope is such a turn off.
Went here for a friend gathering, and it was such a blast! Karaoke was so fun, and the atmosphere and service was great. Very kind.

Bartender with black bob and bangs is very, very rude. I love this bar, come here for karaoke often and haven't had to deal with her before. But she made my friends birthday extremely uncomfortable, treated us like we were drunk and incoherent (most of us are sober, and I am pregnant 🤰) and our first interaction with her was her snatching drinks out of 2 of our party members hands and yelling at them for bringing them in (they had no idea it wasn't allowed, they have never been to this bar before, the bottles were almost empty from a previous dinner, and the bouncer let them in with them. They were not trying to cause any issues, and simply did not realize they had them still.)
She could have just told us to throw them away, avoided physical contact, and we wouldn't have felt uncomfortable. Not to mention, one of our party members just bought a round of 15 shots for our party, so we were obviously there to spend $$$.
She then continued to push us out of a table that we were told to sit at for our friends birthday (I guess there was also another birthday this night, and we were mistakenly seated there by another bartender) We would have moved if we were asked nicely or told that was not for us, but she basically pulled one of our party members to the side and lectured him about us being there and bringing drinks in, again after already physically and aggressively taking them from our hands. Half of our party left because they felt uncomfortable, and the rest of us stayed for a while but tried to avoid her at the bar at all costs. It basically ruined our friends birthday, and she is ALWAYS going to Blue Genes to support.
Idk, probably the weirdest bar experience I have had. Love this place, everyone else is a gem. She ruined the vibes for almost everyone and made half of our group feel like crooks.
Always love being served by Chase, though ❤️
And the other bartender on shift that night was awesome and very helpful, as we refused to be served by her the remainder of our time there.

This was a cool bar to visit but for me personally I couldn't get behind the decor it almost felt like a McDonald's interior but I will say the bartender and door man were both very nice and doing a great job however if I'm paying for a drink and it's 10+ dollars per drink I think they should be higher quality and a little larger for the portions.

Blue Gene’s is a hidden gem in salt lake! The vibes are immaculate. I’ve come here with my girlfriends for drag shows, karaoke and for trivia. We always have way too much fun taking pictures in the Photo Booth and the drink options are great!

Upon entering I wasn't sure of what to expect. We were greeted by a very nice Hawaiian shirt clad bartender who was great at mixing drinks.
The atmosphere is best described as eclectic mixed with a pleasant fever dream of bar room necessities: a very nice pool table, various arcade games, and a wide selection of table top games that ensures the time you spend with friends is going to not only be strange, but delightful as well.
If you want to find a hidden gem with each part of it being a labor of love with a staff to match? This is the place for you.

Worst experience at a place ever, all due to the lame bouncer. Never coming here again! 12-13-2024
