A good friend and I visited Rumbi Island Grill at 10365 South State Street in Sandy today — emphasis on this location, because I’ve had good experiences elsewhere. Sadly, this visit was like getting excited for a tropical vacation only to end up in a damp motel next to a construction site.
First off, the food. Bland. Lukewarm. It had all the excitement of boiled cardboard and tasted like it had been sitting in the back, quietly aging, waiting for someone to finally notice it. Fresh? Not even close. If “island fresh” is supposed to mean “sat around for a while,” then mission accomplished.
The portions were tiny — so small I actually wondered if I’d accidentally ordered off a kids’ menu. I left the place not satisfied, but still hungry. That’s not exactly the ending you hope for when paying full price for a meal.
And let’s talk about the tipping screen. Why is there a tip prompt at the register for a pre-paid, order-at-the-counter experience? Did someone refill my drink? Clear my table? Serenade me with a ukulele? Nope. So why am I being nudged to tip? If it’s because Rumbi told their employees they’ll get tips, maybe Rumbi should also tell them to provide service worth tipping for. Until then, no thanks.
Bottom line: This location just didn’t deliver. Between the uninspired food, the meager portions, and the awkward tip prompt, I doubt I’ll be returning to the Sandy Rumbi anytime soon. If you’re craving Rumbi, I suggest heading to a different location — one that actually remembers how to bring the “island” part of the grill to life.

Food tasted fine but the lady taking are order was rude and acted like she didn’t want us there. I would understand if we were acting like bad customers, but we just walked in and waited for her patiently.

Ordered the pork tacos with jalapeño ranch and Rumbi rice…absolutely delicious! The service was great, perfect, and fast. The staff checked on us several times, and cleared our dishes so we could talk more comfortably! The best part is that all the sauce from the tacos drips onto the rice, making it even more yummy. The only negative was that the music inside was so loud we couldn’t hear each other very well, so we sat outside, and that worked great!

Don't know what happened, but the food quality has decreased astronomically as of late.

Very average. Never been to Rumbi before today, and it was just okay. My food was fine, just average. I built my own bowl and got the mango shredded chicken, steamed veggies, and the Rumbi Rice. My boyfriend ordered vermicelli noodles with his, which cost extra mind you, only to find that they used spaghetti noodles and not vermicelli. Why advertise you use vermicelli when it’s clearly not?
Overall, probably paid too much for a sub-par experience.

Stopped in for a quick bite and was pleasantly surprised by how fresh everything tasted. I got the BBQ chicken salad and ended up asking for a second dressing—definitely recommend it, it made the salad even better. The atmosphere was clean and chill, great for a casual lunch. The service was a bit mixed though. The first woman who helped me seemed pretty annoyed to be there and even had a headphone in, which felt unprofessional. Thankfully, the second girl I talked to was much friendlier and more helpful. Overall, the food made it worth it, and I’d come back. Just hoping for a more consistent experience next time.
