“Extensive menu, excellent, delicious food. We were a table of 4, table made guacamole was delicious with lots of freshly made chips. Service was outstanding. Everyone should give this place a try and make it a regular spot.“

“This was my first experience at Black Sage and it blew my expectations out of the water (which were high in the first place given everything I’ve heard and read).
SETTING
Black Sage sits on the property of Open Sky, a luxury glamping outfit that boasts amazing skyscapes and natural rugged beauty. Upon our arrival, we witnessed a gorgeous sunset and as we left the night sky was blanketed with bright stars.
The restaurant itself is intimate and modern with tasteful decor and offered both indoor and outdoor seating options. Something that stood out to me as well—that sometimes is easily overlooked—is the sound engineering indoors. I felt like we could have comfortable conversations without having to speak over the background noise and chatter of other tables, so we could truly enjoy each other’s company.
FOOD & SERVICE
Chef Charles has curated an incredible menu that made it difficult to choose, so it was great that our server JT walked us through the menu and answered any questions with thorough knowledge of the menu and kitchen.
The relish board was a delight with a great mix of flavors and high quality ingredients (I’ve never had caper berries so large or succulent before). And the peach and burrata dish was delectable with a shallot vinaigrette, flavorful local microgreens, and crispy fried sage. Needless to say, we wiped the plates clean.
It wasn’t easy selecting an entree with so many delectable options either, but with the guidance of JT, I landed on the halibut and it did not disappoint. The portion itself was very large and prepared expertly, sitting atop a mix of creamy hominy and balanced with a tart and sweet apple chutney (an unexpected and deliciously balanced flavor pairing I’d never think to make). Black Sage also scores bonus points for their wonderful wine and local craft beer selection.
Given the mouthwatering tone that the meal had set, we couldn’t leave without dessert, and sampled the cheesecake and bread pudding. While both were phenomenal, the bread pudding holds a special place in my sweet spot with its caramelized char and notes of fragrant orange, all balanced by a sweet cream ice cream.
Overall, Black Sage blew my socks off, and if you’re lucky enough to get a reservation you will not be disappointed (however, walk-ins are welcome and can be accommodated based on availability). It’s also great to see seasonality shine through in the offerings and the thoughtfulness to incorporate locally-sourced ingredients ensure they support the community they belong to. Above all else, Chef Charles’ care and attention to surprising flavor pairings and textures alongside beautiful plating makes for knock out dining. I cannot wait to come back.
Thank you Chef Charles, JT, and the entire Black Sage and Open Sky staff for such a lovely dining experience!“
