Don't sleep on this place. Tons of good beers on tap and the food was GREAT! We got the Steak and Chz (per their recommendation) sweet potato fries, the Let's Shroom and tomato soup - everything was really really good. I'll be back, I'll tell my friends. For real, this place is a hidden gem!

This has been my favorite place for several years but the truth is lately the service is very bad today I came for a beer the bartender just sat me down and poured me a glass of water very well on her part but never offered me a beer and I was there for more than 20 minutes and nobody asked me if I needed anything and there was a guy at the bar that I don't know if he was the bartender or manager but he was on his cell phone for more than 20 minutes and didn't lift his head the whole time if I were the owner I would be in a very bad mood since the employees don't know how to give customer service definitely I won't come back has a great variety of beers very bad experience go another place.

Never overwhelming. Never underwhelming. Just whelming. Descriptions on menu don't line up with the listed beer. Had to go in a hunt down the beer I ordered, but rest of parties drinks came out no problem. The outside area out back is lovely if the wind isn't blowing from the direction of the dumpsters.

Absolutely top notch. The lack of obvious curb appeal hides a great gem of a restaurant and bar with spacious indoor and outdoor seating. Friendly and professional staff. Delicious menu items. Nice selection of beer and liquor. Also a good waiting location if you have DCA business.

Amazing food. Loaded grilled cheeses and wings are to die for! Best spot in town for nice whiskey and craft beers. Oh and the “Secret Garden” is a very nice touch
Service is pathetically slow at the best of times and sometimes you never get service here at all. Glassware is wonky. Order a shot of Eagle Rare or Pappe and you just might get it in a plastic cup; I kid you not on this. Overall poor execution in concept as a high end whiskey bar and as a beer garden. Fail

The new manager of this establishment came up to our table while playing trivia on a Thursday night and accused someone at our table of “elbowing” one of their bartenders on purpose and were asked to leave, what was not mentioned was the gentleman who “elbowed” the bartender (which by any means is not what happened) was helping his wife who is recovering from a life threatening surgery into the restaurant, and if the bartender is unable to clearly see and get out of the way of someone with a physical accommodation they should be working elsewhere. We have been attending Hops and Shine every Thursday for almost 2 years and we will not be back after this event. It is very sad to see that a place that we visited every week and enjoyed, has such disrespectful staff.

In short: good comfort food, mediocre service, nice patio with kids toys & dog bowls, sketchy part of the neighborhood. I would come back for takeout if I was in the area but it's not a nice part of the neighborhood to spend time in. At least the outside back patio makes it feel better!
