“This was our second time visiting. The first was two years ago. I'm pleased to say I would give 5 stars then, and 5 stars now. The service was great from the time we entered until we walked out. I can't remember the drink I had but was a "spirit free" option. I was nervous because it had cinnamon, but was perfectly refreshing. My husband had the optimal wit beer. We had the Pork belly for our appetizer that was nothing short of delicious. We both had steak, he had a ribeye and I had the filet. Perfectly cooked and worth the price. We were too full for dessert this time but will be back and save room!”

Amazing food&service. We had the boar curry and royal thali platter with chicken. I had asked if the duck fried rice was gf and sadly it wasn’t. Then later on, the server brought me out a specially made gluten free duck fried rice on the house! 10/10 we will be back.”

Del Ray Café 205 E Howell Ave, Alexandria French • $$
205 E Howell Ave, Alexandria

“Ambiance is an interesting hole in the wall. We begin with the fluffy warm bread. Soft and fresh and distracting from eating. Then the octopus salad. The octopus is just right; a good sear with a bit of smoky taste, cooked through and just right. Mussels: served with a few pieces of chorizo. Not too many to blot out the flavor of the mussels, mind you. The mussels were a bit dry, this one wasn't swimming in liquid like other places so it. Always fall for the liquid, ordering extra bread to dip into it like a weirdo. Grand marnier soufflés were good. Ask about the dog biscuits!”

“Quite a nice experience in Oldtown for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. The service was prompt and our server was pleasant and attentive. The food was delicious and portions were sizeable. The only con for me was that it was fairly loud. Not a knock on the restaurant as there isn't much they could do about it, aside from reducing the number of tables. And I understand not doing that as the place is busy and more tables equals more business.Overall a nice place for lunch.”

“We live nearby, and this was our first time visiting Spice Kraft. This will DEFINITELY be added to our roster of regular stops. The food was delicious, the portions were large, and the service was great. AND they have happy hour on the weekends! The only ‘complaint’ I have is that I asked for one of the dishes to be extra spicy, and it simply wasn’t. They brought me more hot sauce, and that didn’t get to the level I’m used to either. This is absolutely a ‘me’ thing as I like my food intolerably spicy, and I will know for next time to specify that I want it “extra spicy as if I were in India” to get the right spice level!Dietary restrictions: We are both vegan, and one of us is gluten free as well, and there were plenty of options to choose from! Love that this place is so close!”

“I've only dined here once and really enjoyed the food and service. When I saw their post for First Fridays, I knew this would be perfect time and place for a siblings outing. We ended up sitting in the bar area and just partaking in HH food and drinks versus all the First Fridays specials. Our server/bartender Brian was friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. All of the staff were actually very warm and welcoming. My brother was impressed with the wide variety of spirits and commended the ownerJay, on the selections, when he stopped by to greet our table. The chef also came by to greet us and ensure we were enjoying our food.We started off with a round of hibiscus mules, old fashion and cosmopolitan, all part of the signature HH drinks. We dined on wings, truffle fries, fried green tomatoes, shrimp toast, lamb chops and steak rolls. Everything was cooked perfectly and delicious, with no complaints from even the pickiest of picky eaters. They are rolling out a new drink that's a spin on a pina colada, so of course my brother wanted to try it. He wasn't a fan, maybe it's the white chocolate shavings on top, not sure, but Brian politely removed it. We ended the night with a round of Makers Mark shots vowing to return another night for dinner.”

“Le Refuge Restaurant in Alexandria, VA, is a true gem that transports you to the heart of France with its authentic cuisine and charming ambiance. My recent dining experience at this establishment left me utterly impressed and thoroughly satisfied. Upon arrival, my spouse and I were greeted warmly and seated promptly, though I would highly recommend making advanced reservations as the venue tends to fill up quickly - a testament to its popularity and excellence. Our culinary journey began with a delightful array of appetizers. I opted for the Salade maison à la vinaigrette, a refreshing house salad with a perfectly balanced vinaigrette dressing, while my spouse enjoyed the classic Caesar salad, both impeccably prepared and bursting with flavor. For the main course, I indulged in the Poitrine de poulet Dijonnaise, a succulent chicken breast adorned with a luscious mustard cream sauce. The flavors were exquisite, and the dish paired beautifully with the restaurant's recommended white wine selection. Meanwhile, my spouse savored the Salmon Béarnaise, cooked to perfection and accompanied by a rich and flavorful sauce. No French dining experience would be complete without dessert, and Le Refuge did not disappoint. We indulged in the Peach Melba and Chocolate Mousse Cake, both of which were heavenly and provided the perfect sweet ending to our meal. Throughout the evening, the service was impeccable, with Jean-Francois Chaufour and his family ensuring that every guest felt welcomed and attended to. It's evident that their passion for French cuisine and hospitality shines through in every aspect of the dining experience. Le Refuge's cozy atmosphere and authentic dishes truly make it a standout dining destination in Alexandria. With over 36 years of culinary excellence, it's no wonder that patrons keep coming back for more. Whether you're craving a taste of France or simply seeking an exceptional dining experience, Le Refuge Restaurant is a must-visit. I could not make a a decision on what I wanted but ended up ordering the chicken with broccoli with fried rice. The fried rice is $1 extra. The chicken and broccoli came out hot! The texture of the chicken was a little off. The rice didn't come out at the same time as my entree. I also ordered the Pokémon roll. The roll was huge and very delicious. Some of my favorite dishes included the kalbi ssam short rib lettuce wraps, the sweet plantain empanadas, the Costa Rican ceviche, the duck magret and achiote, the tres leches, and the coffee flan. I also loved the seasonal cherry blossom-inspired cocktail and the mocktail they prepared specially for me. I really loved the ambiance, and even though I had dinner here with friends, I think this is the perfect restaurant for a date night or for celebrating something special.”

“I have been going here for years. This is definitely my go to place for date night, an intimate girls night out, or just to grab some really tasty food. I've never been disappointed. Not only are the staff friendly and down-to-Earth, but the owner is the chef who works every time I've been there. You can see her popping in and out as she frolics in her moments of free time with return customers and close friends who help keep the business poppin. This place is so good, that I really believe this is a gem! Food is consistent and delicious. Cheese selection is always fresh and exciting. The chef really takes pride in her work and it shows. Her rotating menu as well as seasonal cocktails are just proof to any foodie of a person who is passionate about food and the dining experience. If you want to grab a seat at the bar and sneak a peek at the amazing chef as she pops by for a refreshment, or take a seat at a table and enjoy some quaint romantic moments w your guest, you will love it.Because the food is amazing, it is a little pricey. Be prepared to drop at least $80-$100 for two people. However, there are better priced items on the menu, as well as drinks. My personal favs are the Cotswold mac n cheese w crispy onions, ANYTHING with duck (especially the salad), and the daily risotto.Vegetarian options: The meat is definitely the strong suit of this place for most dishes. However, there are available options on the menu for non-meat eaters that are also good and don't feel like an afterthought.Parking: It is a shared free parking lot with the other shops and boutiques in the upper-class strip-mall there. Sometimes when it is really busy, you might have to park 30more steps away from the door, but this food is worth more than 30 extra steps.Kid-friendliness: Not many "kids" items on the menu. But if the supposed child likes to eat good food, this is def a place for them. The crowd who goes tends to be older (I don't see too many kids there regularly), but the cheeseburger and mac n cheese definitely will make any average kid overjoyed.Wheelchair accessibility: The place is a little small, but intimate. More than accommodating for wheelchair access if needed.”

“Don't judge a book by its cover. My husband and I had the pleasure of dining at Fratelli's on Van Dorn in Alexandria Virginia today. From the outside... yea it looks like a locally owned restaurant no special pomp and circumstance. Inside it's clean and nicely appointed. Then you get to the food and honestly this rivals some of Washington so-called best Italian restaurants which I will not name here, but if you're Washingtonian and you've been here a while you know them well and they're not as stellar as they used to be. The Chef owner Manuel greeted us as my husband ordered his second enteee for lunch Veal Parmesan after having a delectable nice size portion of Lasagna. Yes that right his second entree. He's a big eater. I had the chicken Parmesan. All three entrées were amazing pasta cooked to perfection.... the cuts of veal and chicken, amazing, and the sauce out of this world. They even make their own in-house dressing which we purchased a separate bottle of to go. If you're used to Washington's normal fair of Italian restaurants, and you really want something different and amazing, don't hesitate....just go!”

I liked the black truffle popcorn as well but I'm biased because I really like popcorn. It's a unique offering as a snack at a hotel but the serving size (a deep-ish bowl) was ok for the price. The Winter Salad was super good and amply dressed for my taste. I would've had the salmon with it if the soup wasn't so delicious that I ate every spoonful. ?
