Lavender Moon has been my go-to spot for cupcakes since 2013. There’s something about their cupcakes that are so different that it makes you want to keep returning. Maybe it’s the texture of the cupcake or maybe the unique flavors they offer, but one thing I do know for sure is that they use very good ingredients. You can literally taste the difference. They have a few staple flavors like vanilla bean with lemon curd that you can never go wrong with. However, I always try something unique like pistachio cherry or chocolate bourbon. Sure, I like some flavors better than other but I’ve never had a cupcake I could complain about from them.I would consider this place a boutique cupcake place since their flavors as well their interior design is unique and quite whimsical. The staff are nice but I think they may be nicer to regulars than new customers from my observation and input from my friends when they pick up an order for me. It’s a small place so I wouldn’t suggest bringing a large group here unless it is for take-out.Cupcakes are a priced fairly but definitely way more expensive than the ones you buy premade at the grocery store… but you’re paying for high quality ingredients and the taste is 100 times better. I can’t ever complain about their prices because it is simply worth it.Dietary restrictions: They also have gluten-free cupcakes.Parking: Parking can be a bit tricky if you’re looking for something for free- but it’s Old Town Alexandria so it’s to be expected.Kid-friendliness: I’ve seen parents bring their kids here for cupcakes and it’s always so cute to see their faces light up when they see that they have so many flavors to choose from.

It truly is a hole in the wall, it's dark inside so you'd miss it or think that they're closed. I walked right by this spot, at first I thought it was a bit sketchy inside you had to go a little ways inside, but then you smell the sweetness. My gad, I'm so glad I discovered this little joint. They change their menu weekly I believe and they make limited supply, but it definitely is worth grabbing one if you're around down town Alexandria~

What I originally thought would be a bland experience ultimately was a high 3*. To start, it took me quite a while to find this cupcake shop on S Royal St. due to inconspicuous signage on the storefront. It was also after 7:30pm at night which made visibility worse. Upon entering the bakeshop it did not feel like I walked into a cupcake shop. The sale of cupcakes takes place in the rear of the shop however in the front of this store is a dimly lit sitting area with antique decor. The entrance of this shop gives no impression, whatsoever, of a bakeshop. Curious, I continued walking past the front sitting area, and came to the back of the shop where the cupcakes are sold. The representative I met was pleasant and assisted with describing all of what seemed to be 5-7 available cupcake flavors. With so few available flavors I purchased just about every flavor in an assorted dozen. The price of the cupcakes is approximately $3.50 per cupcake. I did sample a couple cupcakes in the car and immediately I recognized the cupcakes I received had been previously refrigerated and were not fresh because they were cold and the cake was firm. It wasn't until I got home and ate a cupcake the next day did the texture improve as the cake softened. The cupcake experience altogether was better the next day when I tried the cupcakes at room temperature. Overall the quality of the cupcakes is good. A few of the cupcakes had a cream cheese icing and I wouldn't be surprised if all of the cupcakes at this shop are topped with cream cheese icing. The icing is rich however I was a bit surprised how imbalanced the cream cheese ratio was in the icing. Leaning heavier on the cream cheese. My favorite cupcake of the flavors I sampled is the Hummingbird. This cupcake shop is a high 3* in my opinion considering all the circumstances I mentioned. A good experience nonetheless and one which you should try.

DO NOT ORDER FROM THIS BAKERY. The owner is completely unprofessional, rude and incompetent. I called to discuss the order with her before writing this review, hoping she would make this right, but instead she yelled at me and hung up on me. If you're looking to be disappointed and disrespected, Lavender Moon is your one stop shop for cupcakes!!!!I ordered gender reveal cupcakes from this bakery to reveal the gender of my first baby, a boy, later this summer to my nieces and nephews (ages 3 to 7).I placed the order weeks in advance and communicated the gender at that time. When I made the order, we confirmed I would pick up the order at 12pm on Sunday 3/17. When I went to pick them up at 12:15pm that day, the front door was locked. I had to knock in order for them to open. When I said I was there to pick up the order, the OWNER said that she didn't have an order for gender reveal cupcakes, she only had a different order for 2 dozen cupcakes.THANK GOD I already knew the gender because the very unprofessional owner was yelling in the back about how she needed 6 cupcakes stat with a BLUE filling. She probably said blue at least 5 times. Again, thank God I already knew otherwise that would have been a beyond disappointing way to reveal something so exciting without my husband there with me.I wait 15 minutes for the cupcakes. I know it was at least 15 minutes because I had my family waiting for me at a nearby restaurant for lunch. During this time, they were RUDELY turning customers away (at least 3) because they weren't prepared to open. When I was leaving, she told me (for the FIRST TIME I MIGHT ADD) that they don't use dye so it would look purplish, but blue. The frosting in the middle that they claim to be "purple", which I might add is a TERRIBLE color for gender reveal cupcakes since - you guessed it - blue and pink make purple... is just straight up PINK. If they don't want to use dye, maybe use blue spirulina or cabbage or another natural color.I'll give it to them - they tasted great, but NEVER AGAIN will I support this business. I hope you won't either.

I ordered one lemon custard and one double (or triple) peanut butter mousse cupcake. They were not appetizing although they *looked* good. Both did not taste fresh at all. The custard in the lemon custard was leaking from a hole in the cupcake wrapper. Needless to say I didn’t finish either and tossed both of them.

These left so much to be desired. The shop itself is very old and dim and messy. We got two cupcakes and it was disappointing. Cupcakes are my thing- i adore cupcakes from all over. This was the first time i actually took a bite of each one and we tossed them. The cake itself is super heavy and dense - almost like a scone crossed with an extremely dense muffin - but lack favor. They're are really bland. The icing equally lacks any dynamic flavor which is hard to do with icing. We were going to go back in the morning for more- but these were both so bad we wouldn't go back.

Absolutely delicious cupcakes! Not too sweet, a perfect balance between the cake and the buttercream frosting. Normally a bit picky when it comes to cupcakes but the ones here are scrumptious. Cherry on top that the flavors are fun and change daily!Dietary restrictions: They have gluten-free cupcakes available too!

On a whim I decided to order cupcakes for my friend's birthday party. I had never heard of lavender moon but based on yelp reviews and proximity I decided to give them a try. I ordered 1 dozen cupcakes for pickup the next day. I ordered an assortment which included 6 different flavors. I appreciated the option to select whatever I wanted and the recommendations offered by phone. When I arrived I found a small business tucked into the streets of old town, dimly lit with minimal decor. If I didn't read reviews and call ahead I probably would have walked out because the place looked like it was going to closed down soon and didn't offer the most welcoming vibe. My order was ready and I was even able to add a few more for myself. The cupcakes were a HIT! They were perfectly moist either way cream cheese frosting and since our celebration was small there was plenty to share/try! I was very happy with this choice in a bakery. However I do think there is room for improvement. There cupcakes were sitting out in two baking racks they were not covered or protected from the elements of the world. Second some of the pleasantries I expect to receive from a business didn't exist here. Lastly, the woman working wasn't very friendly. I would order from here again but hope at the very least they cover their baking racks.

Melt-in-your-mouth cupcakes!! Great prices, friendly staff. Cozy inside with homey atmosphere. A third indoor table might be nice, but the trade would make it feel cramped, so I think they made the right choice. Plus, nice to enjoy cupcakes outside!

If I could give more than 5 stars, I would. I absolutely love Lavender Moon. The employees are always nice and even though I am there often, they always run over the flavors with me every time I ask. The cupcakes, while they are $4, are definitely worth the money. The cupcakes are always so tasty and sweet. The frosting is always rich and delicious and the cake is always moist and the frosting pairs so nicely with the cake. Their flavors are also very unique and there are so many options. I am never disappointed by the service or the cupcakes. Lavender Moon is definitely my favorite cupcake shop in Old Town and would 100% recommend it to any cupcake lovers!Kid-friendliness: Super sweet to me and I am 13 years old. Love going here!

What happened!!! Got my cupcakes today and they were not good at all, did we hire new bakers, but this was definitely not a Lavender moon cupcake ive been obsessed with for the last 6 years! My cupcake was not only off tasting but tasted a bit undercooked, out of the 2 boston cremes one was overfilled and lopsided and these were comp cupcakes after getting the wrong cupcake durring Christmas. Not to mention when I called the other day to find out what flavors they had I was told "i don't know, the usual." The icing was still up to par but both me and my son threw the cake part of the cup cake in the trash, hopefully this is an off day because Im absolutely obsessed with these cupcakes I order them every birthday and Holiday!!!
