There is no better coffee in the DMV than Via Volcan. Indigo and Josie are both fantastic and you can see how much they care about the product that’s put out.

A must try for any coffee enthusiast!

Amazing coffee. I am obsessed and stop by regularly. I only get their drip coffee and it’s so good. Super smooth and just tastes so good.

Love the staff, super nice and friendly. Def a must try!

Very friendly staff. Unique concept. They own their own coffee farm in Panama and the beans get shipped up and roasted in house.

Cute little pour-over coffee shop. I bought their roasted Geisha beans. Ground them at home using the Fellow Ode 2 grinder and brewed using the Moccamaster. Delicious, light, floral.

I had read the story about the cafe and their beans and was excited to try it. I am hunting for a different local roaster to buy beans for use in our espresso machine at home.
The lady gave me some drip samples of both their coffees. Their regular was a bit dark but the geisha was great. I ordered a cortado to try their coffee as an espresso and it was undrinkable. I took 2 sips and it unfortunately went in the trash. Crazy bitter, burnt, worse than Starbucks.
If you like dark Starbucks style coffee you may like it. If you are into pour overs then the Geist would also be good. Unfortunately their regular coffee is not good through an espresso machine.

Replying to the owners reply: thanks for the reply. I got the regular caturra as a cortado - not the geisha. The geisha was unique and not at all bitter. It was the caturra coffee that was disappointing. It may have been the shot was pulled incorrectly but it was quite bad.

Barista was curt when taking my order yesterday and she ushered me out of the shop quickly after handing me my drink. Ordered a caramel latte and it was extremely watered down with just a hint of a coffee taste. As a longtime customer, I was extremely disappointed.

Via Volcan is a hidden gem! The coffee quality is superb and the service is excellent. I was so impressed with a very limited team on site. Josie was incredibly nice and professional! You can tell the coffee and service are on point by all the regulars! Thanks again for the coffee!

Coffee Shop No. 151
Via Volcán
Old Town Alexandria. VA
March 11, 2023; July 19, 2023; February 17, 2024; September 19, 2024

This is my fourth visit to Via Volcan. They were my first experience with a “micro roaster” on March 11, 2023. I met the owner on my first visit. I apologize I don’t remember his name, but he did explain why his shop is special. They roast coffee beans that come from their farm in Panama. I remember being very impressed by how easy it was to converse with the gentleman about his passion for his business.

Fast forward to September 19, 2024 and the Old Town Alexandria Coffee Trail. There was no way I was going to miss out on a cortado from Via Volcan if I were in the area; so I had to add them to the trail. They once again created a masterful cortado. On this day I spoke to a friendly young lady who brought out two different coffees for me to try along with my cortado; their medium roast Caturra and their Geisha. I very much enjoyed both coffees, but the Geisha stood out to me because of its floral aromas.

The shop is small and probably cannot accommodate a large party, but you and a friend could easily enjoy a meetup while sipping on Via Volcan’s delicious coffee. They are truly a single origin specialty coffee shop so if you enjoy the flavor of coffee I highly recommend this place. I also want to add their cortado is the cheapest in the area!

Enjoying life one cortado at a time!

The iced lattes here were quality. Was a pleasant surprise to find a Panamanian owned coffee shop in old town Alexandria. Would be awesome to see some types of Panamanian pastries or pastelitos or empanadas sold here to go with the coffee.
