Yesterday, in the evening, we went here to come because we wanted to order food. The Chinese lady at the front look like that she didn’t want to serve us at all because of me and my parents arguing about being picky with the menu here.
My mom asked the Chinese Lady at the front about the Sweet and Sour Soup that is Vegetarian and she told us that it is made with Chicken Broth. How is it impossible to have a Vegetarian Sweet and Sour Soup that is made with chicken both? The Sweet and Sour Soup needs to be made with vegetable broth if it is listed as the vegetarian option in the menu. This is very misleading. My mom has ordered the Sweet and Sour Soup in a vegetable broth here before. However, the Chinese Lady pointed out the soup in the menu that is vegetarian. Only one vegetarian option.
For the dinner option, there should be vegetarian options like most Chinese Restaurants have. The Chinese Lady could have mention that the Sweet and Sour Soup that is listed as Vegetarian ran out of vegetable broth and that is what my mom has ordered before. She lacks customer service skills. She is very snobby and rude. It looks like that she wasn’t well trained at all for the vegetarian options in the menu because there could be some customers that are vegan or vegetarian.
I used to come to this place every couple of months for lunch, and the food was always great. Unfortunately, my visit today with coworkers was beyond disappointing. I'm not sure if the ownership has changed, but the quality has gone way down.
The service was extremely slow, and the food took forever to arrive. When it finally did, it was cold. My coworker’s chicken dish was overwhelmed with garlic, and the fried rice tasted completely different—more like a mushy, strange version of what I used to enjoy.
None of us were happy with our meals, and it felt like a complete waste of money. Sadly, I won’t be coming back.
Their Lo mein is the absolute worst I have ever eaten. Looked like leftovers, tasteless, chicken had very strange texture, practically no vegetables. I tried to add more vegetables and sesame oil, fish sauce to better the taste, nothing helped. Noodles were mushy too. Inedible! Into the garbage it went.
Old school! Dinner special comes with egg roll or spring roll and choice of soup (my mom got wonton, I got egg drop). They give you free peanuts immediately when you sit down which is so nice if you're hungry! You automatically get a pot of tea. After dinner you get a traditional fortune cookie and two fresh orange slices. I love this place. Sometimes you don't want the newest trendy thing, just the comforting classics.
Charge for refills on their soft drinks. 2.50 each. They do not tell you. It just shows up on the bill. The response is misleading. I had a fountain drink and was charged for my second drink. I will not be visiting again.
We used to order from this restaurant at least twice a month. They must have had a change in ownership because the food has drastically changed. Our first hint was that the vegetable dumplings had a white filling… instead of green. They said that the white was tofu, and no, they didn’t change their recipe (?). We tried them again, and all of the dishes tasted very different… and the staff was different when I picked up the order. We tried it one more time, and we won’t be going back. We had been loyal customers for years. I don’t like being lied to about the recipe change… we won’t be going back.

I’ve had lunch at Szechuan Star a few times and have also ordered takeout many times, and I have nothing but great things to say about this place. The food and service have always been top-notch, never disappointing. It’s a small restaurant, but it’s clean and cozy, with a welcoming atmosphere. The staff is friendly and always goes above and beyond, paying attention to every detail to ensure customers are happy.
The food is consistently delicious, and the prices are unbeatable, especially with their lunch specials. For anyone local, this spot is a must-try if you’re craving flavorful Chinese food with excellent service!

I’m a long time customer and I love this place! If you live in Annandale, IYKYK. I have never ordered Chinese food from anywhere else. I’m serious. And my food always arrives piping hot. I can’t pick any favorites because everything is so good and the quality of their meat and produce is amazing.
