I lived in China previously and this restaurant has a separate menu of traditional, authentic Chinese dishes that are delicious. The owner is from Nanjing and is proud to offer authentic Chinese cuisine.

I'm going to say that when I first entered this establishment I really wasn't expecting much, especially since my friend and I were the only people present late Saturday for dinner (at least for a few minutes). Nonetheless, we decided to give this old-style Chinese restaurant a try. Surprisingly, everything turned out quite well! The servers immediately offered us Chinese menus (they have two separate sets of menus) assuming we'd want it (which was correct in this case), and we ordered two classic Northeastern Chinese dishes (beans with pork ribs and stir fried pork) as well as some "hand pulled pancakes". While the stir fried pork was somewhat forgettable, the beans with pork ribs reminded me of the food I often used to eat at home and the hand pulled pancake was really tasty (wish it came with a sauce though). I have to say, for what it's worth this restaurant is quite nice and offers a variety of NE Chinese dishes you may be hard pressed to find elsewhere. They also serve a few Sichuan style ones in case you're in the mood for that.

Overall, I recommend asking specifically for the Chinese menu if you want something unique. This restaurant is underrated in that regard. Otherwise you'll be stuck with the usual orange chicken, lo mein, and other American-Chinese fare.

OLD LADY "HOSTESS"
HORRIBLE, DISRESPECTFUL, CUSTOMER SERVICE!

FOOD WAS NOT MADE AS REQUESTED

FOOD, LUKEWARM?

FOOD WASNT FRESH: ORDER THAT SHOULD'VE TAKEN ATLEAST 10 MINUTES, TOOK ONLY, 3!!! FOOD HAD OLD TASTE.

I didn't particularly care for the customer service, either. The Older Lady at the counter was quite sarcastic.
At first I walked in, and inquired as to the price of the meal, tax included.
Once I made this apparently, "appalling inquiry, she proceeded to ask me where I stayed. When I pointed down the street, she then quipped with, "You stay in the back of the restaurant?" ---Suggesting I stayed, in essence, either in the alley behind the restaurant, or at best, some room for rent, in the rear of the building ---if such property there even exists.

I let that go, only to have her immediately speak in her native language, to the only other employees present, which was, an older male, and a younger woman. After saying whatever she said, they all looked at me and laughed.
Then, the Old Woman chose to ask me three times in a row, "Then where is it, that you stay?" expressing perplexity, as if she couldn't have heard correctly, that I ACTUALLY stayed on the NICE neighboring street, the one adjacent to the restaurant! ---and not in an alleyway, as she suggested, initially.
--All this because I asked for the price, tax included, to make sure that I had enough money on my card, to pay for the meal I was ordering!

Then, when I handed her the card for payment, she looks at my Cashapp card (that looks like many other Cashapp cards, she has probably seen, many times, and slides in, as a final insult, "What is this, A GIFT CARD?"
.....a card that clearly says Cashapp on it!

While I'm handed my food, 3 minutes later, amidst a move to rush me out, a woman came in for an order, and sat down at a table.
When I collected my bag, the Old Lady says, "Now this is a REAL, Steady Customer, from around here." Then says to the customer, "He's not from around here."

I check my bags contents, and as I do this, the Old Lady says, "You can't eat in here! Go now! TAKEOUT ONLY!"

--Saying all that, yet, I hadn't made one move, that could be misconstrued as me trying to dine in.

And even if I had wanted to sit down for half a second, as a PAYING customer, I clearly should've been afforded that consideration!

IN SUMMARY:

I was treated prejudicially, along with sarcasm, versus any Standard of Decorum and fair treatment.

I will NEVER GO THERE AGAIN!

AND THE EXTRA SPICY, HUNAN CHICKEN, was BLAND, and OLD TASTING.

OLD TASTING, LIKE THE ROTTEN RESPECT LEVEL, OF THE ASSUMED OWNERS/EMPLOYEES.
--PARTICULARLY THE OLD LADY, THAT WORKED IN THE CAPACITY OF HOSTESS.

HORRIBLE AND DEMEANINF MMMMN̈XKLKL

A real gem, especially if you know the food culture and their specialization. They make good North Eastern dishes, but their specialty is actually JiangZe (江苏/浙江), that's anywhere between Shanghai, Nanjing and Hangzhou. The owners are old school, which may be misunderstood by modern quick to judge culture, but if you are there to appreciate the food and not there to enforce political correctness, then you are at the right place.

Got the bean curd with vegetables, it was very good! Took a star off though because the tablecloth was kinda dirty. Prices were relatively good for this area though Updated from previous review on 2024-07-28

RACIST CHINESE CASHIER/HOST!! One of The worst type I've ever experienced in my entire life?. As soon as I walked in, the old lady with a black tee frowned and looked me up and down like a lowlife. Very quick to ask me if I know what I want, like I don't belong there, like I should take my filthiness somewhere else. And then I offered to pay with cash and card, she then started arguing with me about it. I guess I should have paid with only my card to make it seem like I'm rich! Got my combination fried rice and walked out. Only to realize there was no folk or even napkin in the my bag. I had to walk back. And when she saw me, she immediately grabbed the fork and napkins without me saying a word, like she knew what she just did. What an angry moment. IF YOU'RE BLACK STAY AWAY from this place at all costs!!! Take your money where you're appreciated. Oh...and the food tasted like a plate of SODIUM!

Red bean buns were absolutely horrible, none of the four of us could eat it. Raw dough, tasted like cornmeal playdough, wrapped around a dry and powdery red bean substance. Did they not add yeast, then not bake these?? It's not food! What is going on

Surprisingly, this is one of the best Chinese restaurants I have been to in DC adjacent areas. Their food was delicious, authentic, and of a large portion. The service was great! They specialize in Dongbei food so don’t forget to try it out! I didn’t understand where all the bad reviews come from. Ask for their authentic Chinese food menu.

I drove here specifically and was extremely disappointed. I ordered dried tofu with hot pepper and pickled cabbage bone. It was definitely not the level of a chef.

pretty good if you’re craving homestyle chinese food. If you order the traditional chinese dishes you’ll find no shortage in flavor (we ordered the cumin lamb and three pepper chicken). Service was attentive and friendly and our food came out quickly. Will go back!

Fantastic authentic Chinese, best selection around, and friendly, well-spoken staff! Better than the authentic restaurant in Farragut DC. This and MT are the only games in town for authentic Chinese, and Hunan Gate wins on selection!

Poor customer service! I dislike rude people! Learn how to speak to people with respect when coming to spend money in your establishment! Don’t have a business period if you don’t have customer service skills!
