Ordered Deluxe Egg Foo Young and it was far from good. It was burnt and tasted of old cooking oil. We have had it once before and it was good. So I’m not sure if they were too busy, but it was a waste of money tonight.

I don’t order pick up very much, so to see that my request over the phone of a medium spicy level for general tsos chicken came out mild, was extremely disheartening. This has happened before. I’m just happy. It was ready in the time that I was quoted instead of double the amount of time like usual. If I did not have a sick at home, I would have waited for my order to be corrected. And for one order of general tsos chicken with fried rice to cost almost $20 and come out incorrectly is horrific. If there was any other Chinese food place inside of the 30 minute radius, that was half decent, I would not go here anymore.

First off, if you are here for authentic and good Chinese food you came to the right place. If you are looking for a nice ambiance or top-tier service you are better off going elsewhere.

With that being said, Hunan King makes excellent Chinese food. Almost every item we got on our numerous visit here were good to the point we would visit multiple times a month. Throughout my numerous visits I've ordered Hot-Spicy Chicken, Szechuan Style Pork Intestine, Sweet & Sour Pork Cutlets, Beef Stew Pot, Salted Baked Flounder Fish, Hot-Spicy Shrimp, Spicy Bean Curd Filets, Salted Pepper Squid, Steamed Tofu with Fish, Boiling Fish, String Beans with Minced Pork Szechuan Style, Szechuan Bean Curd with Pork, Eggplant Pot with Pork, Dry Pot Fatty Beef, and Dry Pot Beef.

Everything we ordered was good however I will highlight my favorites:

Dry Pot Beef: (nice spicy sauteed beef wit savory potatoes and crunch celery)

Boiling Fish: Lots of spicy fish in a nice spicy szechuan oil

Eggplant Pot with Pork: Sauteed eggplant to create a spicy smoky flavor with enhancements from ground beef.

Again, if you are looking for the best Chinese food in Blacksburg (since LYC closed), then this is the place. Highly Recommend

Probably the longest running Chinese restaurant in Blacksburg. I guess covid put an end to the buffet. It's been replaced by fish tanks. I definitely miss that, but ordering from the menu I had shrimp egg foo young and my lunch companions had the General Tso's chicken and shrimp fried rice. We all had food to take home.
This place does seem to be a favorite among Virginia Tech's Chinese faculty, staff and students when it comes to community dinner style dining.

Terrible general Tao’s. Sticky sweet.3 pieces of broccoli, no nuts, peppers. YUK!

Aside from the bare minimum, the only nice things about this place were the pretty fountain at the entrance and the cool fortune cookies they handed out. Everything else, unfortunately, was a letdown. The restaurant is supposed to be a Chinese place, but the food didn’t taste anything like it at all, not even close. But to be fair, the portions and prices were pretty decent. The service was painfully slow and unenthusiastic. The atmosphere felt dull and gloomy, and if you’re into that, good for you; but for me, it just gave off a depressing vibe. The place was pretty much empty too, which kind of says it all. Overall, definitely NOT somewhere I’d recommend.

I have been coming to or ordering from Hunan King for nearly a decade now, and I cannot adequately explain my love for this restaurant. The food is great. Atmosphere is wonderful and I enjoy the koy pond so much. Service is the abrupt sort that the best Chinese places have, so you'll need to flag down the waiters for things, but they will take care of you when you do.
However, if you are ordering take-out around dinner time, gauge your expectations. If you're picking up, don't be afraid to walk down and let them know you're there, then politely go back to the waiting area. Stare at the koy pond, watch some fish. Don't hassle them.
I'm not Chinese, but I have had several Chinese friends order off the Chinese menu and they universally have enjoyed the food as well.

The place was okay and not crowded. I ordered silken tofu, or Ma Pa Tofu , chicken with dry hot pepper, and sweet and sour cutlets. The food was decent, the cutlets were good but the chicken too crunchy. The tofu was great! Overall this place is pretty good

The food is very overpriced. Stick with the typical fried chicken dishes if you don't want to be disappointed by the amount you get for the price. We spent $50 for three dishes (orange chicken, strong beans with pork, and Szechuan chicken. The string beans with pork were overcooked, dry and oily. There was maybe a couple ounces of finely ground pork. It was mostly oil. I'll stick with chinese kitchen.

Someone in our party wanted to try this restaurant. Big mistake. Not a real authentic Chinese restaurant if the spicy mustered comes in a packet. Fried Rice looked like brown rice with some egg in it. Food was greasy and I've never seen chicken like that in a Chinese dish. Looked like little pieces of chicken bits. And a trip to the bathroom will remind you of a roadside gas station bathroom. The smell was so bad I didn't even want to wash my hands. This was a once and done adventure that I wish we had never done.

Ordered egg rolls and vegetable lowmein which were just average. Service was fine. If you have nowhere to go and still feel like eating Chinese food then still works. It's inside the mall and has plenty of seats.

Fresh crisp vegetables… good sauce but I thought could be more ginger spicy and authentic… but good quick service

Came here with my parents for lunch at around 2, and it was pretty quiet. We're Chinese, so we were ordering more traditional dishes when we came here. I'm not too familiar with some of the English names for the dishes, but we ordered pork buns/shumais as an appetizer- I liked the pork buns but the shu mais were definitely frozen from a package. For entrees, we got a frog leg dish, an eggplant dish, and a spicy beef dish.

According to my parents, not everything was exactly super authentically done, but the food was good and the portions were great. Pricing was okay. You're not going to get the best chinese food in SW Virginia, but it's still not bad.
