It’s just so good. The burned ends. The local oysters, the hush puppies. The staff is super friendly. When you walk in the door the wood burning smell will immediately confirm your decision to come here was correct. 😊

It was terrible, July 4th, so we expected a wait. However, the young lady taking our order, had absolutely no idea what she was doing. Took our order, WOYLD NOT let us pay, she didn't ring it in their system. Couldn't pay til food was ready. Took 10x longer than she estimated. Took 15 mins to pay for our food bcuz she was taking.other orders and not ringing them up. Complete chaos.we got take out bcuz she talked us out of eating there. Told us tje wait would be much longer. You guys have a great business there with good food. Figure this out.

I stopped here for the first time on my way back home from across the bay to get a carry out order. It was excellent! Tanya, who is very friendly, greeted me immediately and took my order which was ready to go quickly. The pulled pork platter was a generous serving of pulled pork ( I don't eat bread so this was perfect for me) with sides of great cole slaw (have to have this to go with barbecue!) and the best tasting tender brussel sprouts. The pulled pork was lean with no fat or gristle at all. I will definitely return. I loved every bite and the price is very reasonable.

I absolutely love going to Smalls and grabbing a bite to eat! The pulled pork is one of my favorites, as well as the hush puppies! Can never go and not get some! The atmosphere is all around amazing, plenty of laughs had at the bar! All of the servers are super nice as well!

My family and I went in this past Saturday night. They said it would be a 20 minute wait which was no problem. We got drinks from the bar and chilled until they were ready (bartender was great). We sat down and were not greeted until 30 minutes after we were sat. We watched every server roll silverware and stare at us. I thought maybe they sat us in a closed section. Two tables next to us sat down 20 minutes after us and were greeted in 5 minutes(by our server). They all left after us since we were there so long. Eventually we were greeted and our server got our drink order. We did not get our waters nor alcoholic drinks for 20 minutes! Alcoholic drinks, I understand can take a while considering bar makes them. But waters? Come on. We ordered our food and some things were wrong but we were eating finally so we didn’t complain. We asked for the check and she said she would get it. We watched her come in to the dining room twice talking to her other tables with no check in hand for us. We eventually got up to find someone to pay with. As a server myself, I completely understand being busy but I could never imagine treating my tables like this. There was no hurry for any of the servers. All in all, do better please.

I have loved this place since they were in Norfolk! The people alone make it worth the trip but MY god, the food and drinks are top tier! It’s a must if you’re stopping through the ESVA!

Was hoping for a nice quick stop on a road trip. Looked interesting from the road. Inside, front of house staff was on phone taking an order, one older gentleman waiting too. Phone order took a while and staff was verbally rude and short with caller. After call was finished, she took order from gentleman and was rude with him about his choices. She never asked for help to seat us or for anything else. Multitasking at the front of house is essential. Decided to leave based on this experience. Passed it again on the way back, laughed at the thought of stopping to give it a second chance.

Brisket was more like beef jerky. No way it was made today. Could barely chew it.

Asked if the restaurant was still seating at 850pm on 07/04/25 hostess responded “yes.” Waited about 5 min or so to be seated .We sat in an empty restaurant around us, and not a single person ever came to wait on us—frustrating, since we had drove back from Md to Virginia Beach with only this place in mind. Food smelled good and place was nice inside. As an interracial couple sometimes these situations are questionable. I will chalk this up to a long day and perhaps the employees were tired. Still 1 Star atmosphere. Walked out

Many parts of our order were either extremely disappointing or outright wrong.

The Chicken Caesar Salad we had gotten came without chicken, and instead of the cornbread croutons and parmesan flakes like they claimed came with white bread croutons and regular shredded parmesan. Instead of taking back the dish, the waiter came with a cup of cold undercooked chicken.

The Brisket Chili that I ordered was an incredibly small portion for its 12 dollar price, and had almost no actual brisket in it, just ground beef. The pieces of brisket were so small and sparse I was having trouble finding them, and had forgot it was even advertised as a Brisket Chili in the first place.

Our waiter was very young and inexperienced, mixing up drink refills which took us ages to get in the first place, but this wasn't as bad compared to another we witnessed come out of the forest serving the table next to us with an extremely dirty uniform, and his hair so long it nearly fell into the food.

All in all a very disappointing experience, their barbecue was not bad and the restaurant seemed clean, but considering how it was managed it leaves me worried about the raw oysters which I started my meal with (though I will admit they tasted great) - 2 Stars.

What a great place in many ways!
It was July 5th, and we had just driven about four hours from seeing family in PA. The deli down the road was closing early because they weren't getting any customers, and wouldn't serve us. The town was packed, lines were long, and we couldn't get in anywhere.
On the way out, we saw Smalls BBQ and decided to give it a try.
I am so glad we did! They were also very busy, but the hostess couldn't have been more accommodating. She seated us as soon as she could. We had a great meal and got back on the road to drive another two hours to get home.
The food was delicious! I had the pork BBQ sandwich with potato salad and baked beans. Hubby had the brisket sandwich with the broccoli salad. We split an order of fries.
We will definitely be back the next time we are in the area.
