We sat on the outside terrace and ordered both the Happy Hour Steak Frites and the Steak Tartare. While it took a while for our drinks to arrive and my “bone dry” vodka Martini was mixed with Vermouth, the Steak Tartare was wonderful as was our server, Ben.
We had a delicious dinner! The food quality, taste, and appearance were fantastic. Our server (sorry, forgot her name) was excellent. We appreciated her attentiveness and suggestions. We will be back!
Been here several times and has been great. This experience was less than their best. Ordered 3 New York Strips all MR - one was med well one was medium and the other was rare. Didn't send back as evening was already very long. Unusual because every other time here has had perfectly cooked steaks. Steaks themselves were high quality and salads and sides were excellent. Hopeful that next visit will be more attentive to detail on steak temp.
We had read some great reviews about Black Cow Chophouse, so we thought we'd give it a try, (and they did not disappoint!) Our server was welcoming, hospitable and knowledgeable. The food was nothing short of amazing. We enjoyed the Calamari, bread and salads, followed by Chateaubriand, along with a side of roasted-smashed potatoes. Everything was delicious! We will most certainly come back!
Black Cow Chop House is an outstanding steak house. I am overjoyed that this restaurant opened in Charlottesville, which is starving for good steakhouses. This place is one of the best I've been to. GO.
Another amazing meal at Black Cow. This time I tried the lobster mac and cheese. It's sold as a shareable side - but it's more than enough for a meal. Oh and it's absolutely fantastic. The crab cakes, which I've had in the past, are also fantastic. Yes, they are known for their steaks - and the steaks are super delicious and tender - but it's also a great place for seafood.
We were able to experience the Japanese Wagyu cooked to absolute perfection and the filet was also delicious. All 3 desserts were great: key lime, crème brûlée, and chocolate mousse. The service was top notch.
Really good steakhouse!
The service was very good from the waitress a little long between courses. The portion of meat was good but the sides were small but very good!
Some of the best food in Charlottesville. On the pricy side but worth every penny. If you go, try the sides they are fantastic.

Not what I had expected; bit on a chard of bone which was supposed to be boneless piece of meat.
This was the first we have been to Black Cow when the steak wasn't perfect. We had the NY Strip, medium rare. My husband and I both thought it had more fat and gristle than we had ever had before. I also thought it was prepared more medium than medium rare. It wasn't warm either. Our server asked if I wanted to have it prepared again, I said no but probably should have said yes. The service and all other food were great. The other couple enjoyed their meal of pork chop and rib eye.
The food was absolutely amazing!
Thomas and Ben were great. They made us feel very welcome. They had Lawson's Sip of Sunshine on draft...my favorite. The steaks were good, not great. The flank steak special was actually impressive. The filet and the chateaubriand were just good. I expected better for the price. It was cooked properly. Just not as tender as I would have liked. I would go back if I was in the area, but I probably would not go out of my way.
Excellent filet!
