I came here for my birthday dinner. The food was good, and our waitress was pleasant throughout most of the evening. They brought out a complimentary ice cream for my birthday, which was a thoughtful touch, and at the same time offered the dessert menu should we choose anything extra. Because the meal was already very filling, we chose not to order anything further.
During the checkout process, the tone felt noticeably colder. The card was swiped inches in front of us, the card reader was placed directly on the table, and the server stood watching while the tip was entered. This may be the restaurant’s standard process — given their use of QR code menus and limited space — but in a fine dining environment, a bit more discretion in handling transactions would elevate the experience. The way it was handled felt pressured and detracted from an otherwise enjoyable evening.
Overall, the food and the birthday acknowledgment were appreciated, but the checkout process left the evening ending on a less gracious note.

Black Cow Chophouse did not disappoint but my most first visit was truly outstanding thanks to Thomas and Julie. From the moment we were seated, their service was nothing short of superb—attentive without being overbearing, knowledgeable about the menu and pairings and genuinely welcoming. They went above and beyond to make the evening special.
The star of the night was the porterhouse. Cooked to absolute perfection, it had the perfect balance of tenderness and flavor—easily one of the best steaks I’ve ever had. The presentation was elegant, and every bite reminded me that Black Cow is such a gem in Charlottesville.
The combination of incredible food and top-tier service from Thomas and Julie made this a 5-star experience all around. If you’re looking for a truly memorable steakhouse experience, this is the place to be.

The place is nice and service is good. I ordered the 16OZ Prime NY Strip medium rare. Was flavorful but chewy. For $55 I think is a little overpriced. Caesar Salad side was delicious and bread was fresh and repeatable.

Exceptional dining experience. Like, seriously, everything was on point. Service - top notch. Valerie was friendly, patient, and inviting. Great recommendations and efficient but paced service. Food - also top notch. You can literally see them grilling meats in front of you. I ordered the crab cakes (not grilled) and they were delicious. Side of skin-on red potatoes were heavenly. Loved this place. A must stop.

Amazing steak house with great drinks and nice decor. The only thing that was off putting was being asked to “leave” after you spend so much money because they’re trying to turn tables…….there were 5 open tables already

Went with two of my cousins and a friend. We have all been to and enjoy a good amount of steakhouses. We all agreed that these are the best cuts of meat we have all ever had. I had the cowboy ribeye, and the other guys had a filet, the boneless ribeye and a strip. All were incredible. Kate was out waitress she had impeccable timing and graciousness. Overall amazing time and food.
