We always make it a point to visit citizen burger bar when we’re down in Charlottesville. Most recently stopped in during a weekend stay. The food and service are always top notch. If you’re looking for some great food and a good cocktail, this is your spot.
We were going to a show across the mall at the Paramont. They were extremely busy. They seated us outside under umbrellas. There was some rain coming down, but we stayed dry. We let the waitress know that we had limited time before the show started. Anna told us she would have us out of there in time. Everything was great. The food was hot. Anna outstanding. The hamburger was a half pound of perfection. The sweet potato fries were made out of whole cut sweet potatoes. The onion rings were huge and cooked all the way through. Having eaten there several times. As always, one of my go to places.
Love the chatty atmosphere, portions are large and so yummy
It was ok but nothing special. A bit pricey for what it was.
Solid pick - overall food was good and server was very attentive. The quality of the meat was good and healthy portions.
I am *very* picky about cleanliness so take what I say with a grain of salt. The food is fantastic, best burger I've ever had (and I've had a lot of them), however I found the place to be a bit unhygienic. The bathroom sinks have stuff in them, we got given a plate with a few visible fragments of food, and there was a bartender sneezing all over the bar for a good 10 minutes, and they were covering their mouth with their hand, and even then didn't quite succeed to cover it every time. If you're sneezing more than a few times, please leave areas where food/drink is prepared :)
With all that being said, even though all of that pushes me away, I would still give this place another chance in the future simply because I had the best burger I've ever had here. Good job chefs :)
Awesome!
Great burger love it but the fries need work they sit on the counter and wait for the server to bring them with your order and they are cold and greasy by the time you get them. Last time there in May I sent them back and asked for a fresh cooked batch which they did and they were so much better
This place was great! The food was delicious and our server, Mike, took great care of us. The atmosphere was a bit loud (music + open kitchen) but the food makes up for it. Highly recommend the truffle fries! Also including decor from their bathroom

On a cold winter evening, we found this restaurant close to the Jefferson theater. The indoor seating along the mall was great for people watching and taking in the snowy sights. Once we were seated, our server was very attentive and personable.
The beer selection here is impressive and has a huge selection of draft and bottled beverages.
She got the Stone Pilsner and I got the Union Jack drafts.
The burger selection is endless- but we opted for the special house Citizen burger, and I got a side of mushrooms.
The fries were amazing! The truffle fries even more so- highly recommend the upgrade.
The burgers were huge! The burger itself was cooked to our preference, the cheese was melted perfectly, and the toppings were on point. I have never seen a fried pickle on top of a burger before, but understandably so- there wouldn’t be much room to fit it in there!
All in all, highly recommend this place and really want to go back and try the salmon BLT!

It was very warm inside and I didn't want to shed two layers and squeeze into a crowded bar seat, so I chose the 40 something degrees outside where there were a couple of larger parties. I won't estimate the weight of my excellent Salmon on Sunflower Wheat, suffice it to say it might have been split in two for twice the price at the average downtown restaurant. Maybe the chef rewarded my adventurous seating, but all was fine with a server in shorts. Also had generous sweet potato fries with honey mustard, served in a paper cup although I saw those dreadful, dinky metal things on another table.

Last month, my husband and I visited Citizen Burger for the second time, and it did not disappoint us. It was just as good as our first visit about two years ago. This time, we started with the crispy fried pickles, which are somewhat different from those at other restaurants because they serve them cut in half. They were delicious!
My husband ordered the Citizen Burger, which comes with a variety of flavors, including black onion, garlic aioli, and a fried pickle on top. Be warned: it is a big burger! I opted for the Steakhouse Burger, which features tasty cheddar cheese, bacon, and onion straws. I substituted the brioche bun with lettuce to make it a little healthier. I loved it!
As if the burgers weren’t big enough, they are served with hand-cut Citizen fries. I appreciate that everything we had was freshly made.
I recommend this place.

Ordered a simple burger and salad. Salad was ordered with dressing on the side but came dressed. Burger came out with wrong side and cold. Service was sub par also. Really bad time today at Citizen.

Burgers were very good, as were the French fries. Onion rings are beer battered, but way too much breading and greasy for my liking.

This is by far my favorite burger place in Virginia. The quality of all the toppings and especially the meat are phenomenal (the bacon is AMAZING.) The appetizers that I’ve had are incredible as well - highly recommend the fried pickles. My one gripe, and this is pretty minor, is that the bread is a bit dry. I really respect all of their sourcing practices (everything is local and fresh), but every time I’ve eaten there I have been disappointed by the roll. Otherwise, it is perfect!!! Cannot recommend enough.
