As someone originally from California, I’ve been on the hunt for a legit burrito spot, and El Tio is hands down the closest I’ve found to that classic CA flavor. The food is always delicious and hits the spot every time. The staff is super friendly and helpful, and you can tell they really care about what they do. Whether you’re grabbing a quick bite or stocking up in the tienda, it’s just an all-around great local spot. Support small businesses like this, you won’t be disappointed!

Best papusas and carne asada burrito in town! Affordable with generous portions, friendly and casual service. Also, the best water mugs in town!

Absolutely love this place. It’s more than just a grocery store—it’s a whole vibe. The shelves are packed with Latin-American staples you can’t find in regular supermarkets. I grabbed some Sazon and Tajin, plus a few Mexican snacks I used to eat as a kid. The pan dulce looked amazing too. And nothing beats the taste of real Mexican Coke in a glass bottle—sweet, crisp, and nostalgic. Staff was friendly and helpful, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. Highly recommend if you're craving authentic Latin flavors or just want to try something new. 100% worth it.

I heard this is where the top chefs go for great food, and it did not disappoint. The servers were very good, but didn’t speak English… perhaps this adds to the authenticity. The atmosphere upstairs is good. I didn’t see downstairs.

Best carne asada burrito we've ever had, and the pupusas are out of this world! All the workers were absolutely lovely and very attentive. Amazing value for how much food you get and the quality is outstanding.

El Tio donated tacos to the nurses at UVA Hospital for Nurses Week and they were SO GOOD!! We are so grateful for local businesses who support nurses!! I will definitely be coming by for more, thank you so much! :)

I have had El Tio now on four occasions. The first time I had the carne asada burrito. I was surprised by the flavor and freshness of the ingredients. It was the most authentic tasting burrito I have had in VA. I enjoyed it so much that I went back two more times. The most recent time I had chicken tacos and now I can’t decide which one is my favorite. If you are looking for authentic cuisine, El Tio is it.
