Plaza Azteca Mexican Restaurant

First time here and 10/10 - best Mexican food in the area, service was amazing and friendly, clean restaurant and food was so so so good. Will be back!

I originally posted this a month ago but it's not showing. So I'm posting again!

So when we first got there for dinner, we were taken to a small table in the very back right next to the wait staff's stand, where we would have been squeezed into a small 2 person booth. Now, we are senior citizens and I walk with a cane, so I'm assuming that we were seated out of complete site so that people wouldn't have to see old folks in there, since we walked right past an empty booth on the way to where they took us, and theres was other open seating, so it wasn't a matter of the last spot in the place. Since the booth was so small and crowded with staff, we took our menus and went and sat at the bar.

It was quite busy at the bar and they definitely could have used another bartender. But after the manager got done chatting up a lady at the bar, he took our order. I ordered a chimichanga and a side of guac to put on it. Well finally the food came, except for the guac. I told the guy who brought the food that my guac was missing. He took off and I waited for him to bring some back. Nobody came. I then told a gal behind the bar that I didn't get the guac I ordered and she looked it up on the computer. Then when the manager was done AGAIN talking to his girlfriend at the bar, he asked me about it and I told him I hadn't gotten it. A few minutes later, a wait staff member came and asked me about the guac and wanted to know if I wanted a large or small order. I again said a side of it. He walked away, and I was assuming he would come back with it. I waited and waited...by this point I had eaten my sides and taken a bite of one of the chimichangas. It was dry, somewhat flavorless meat with a tasteless cheese sauce. It definitely could have used some guac! But NONE came.

My husband's meal was also substandard and his comment was that we could have made out better at Taco Bell!

I told the gal behind the bar that I hadn't gotten the guacamole so to make sure I wasn't charged for it. She was surprised and apologized. She then told the manager, whose girlfriend had just left, and he looked suprised and went straight to the kitchen. Nothing else was said about it. The bill came and luckily the guac wasn't on it.

So this place is really beautiful and no expense was spared decorating it, but it's kinda like putting lipstick on a pig. The food is substandard, the service is substandard and the management needs training.

We will not be going back and I can now see that this place is just as bad as it was rumored to be when it was down the street.

Our server Adri was so kind and polite, the food was amazing, fresh and delicious guacamole and my husband said they had the best salmon!

Horribly overpriced and mediocre food. I used to love this place, but since they moved and reopened prices have skyrocketed and I do not think the food is good. Also, the place is crazy loud.

The glass lights and atmosphere look amazing and the staff were friendly and polite. That ends the good things. The booths that are tall and black with silver are so cramped and awkward to sit in. The salsa is ketchup or tomato sauce based flavored. My meal came incorrect and had more unfortunate “salsa” on it. We also got rice and beans - flavorless- white rice - black beans - no seasoning. The margarita we shared was weird, tasted nothing but alcohol- no juice like we requested by its name. Garnished with dried fruit that was unappetizing to look at and wasteful. Hopefully not reused. Shutter.
We are new to area and searching for a good Mexican restaurant. This is not it. Sad

This place is in a League of their own... Without a doubt, the best new restaurant I have tried in a while.. Food was excellent... Service was excellent... Very clean with a great atmosphere.. this would be one of my top recommendations to anyone in the Charlottesville area.. Great experience..
