I’ve been to many First Watch locations up and down the East Coast over the years, and I can confidently say this was by far the worst experience I have ever had at any First Watch — and honestly, one of the worst restaurant experiences I’ve had in general.

This visit was to the Iron Bridge location:

Chesterfield, VA 23832

From the moment we were seated, it was clear that this restaurant lacks basic standards of service, cleanliness, and leadership.

First, our server was essentially nonexistent. We may have seen her three times total during our entire visit. When you’re dining out, especially at a brunch spot known for service and atmosphere, you shouldn’t feel abandoned at your table.

Refills took 20 minutes — and that’s not an exaggeration. That’s unacceptable, especially when the restaurant was not slammed to the point where service should completely break down.

Cleanliness was another major issue. Most (not all, but most) of the servers, hostesses, and even BOH staff were wearing their hair completely down. In the restaurant industry, this is a big no. It’s unsanitary, unprofessional, and simply not a clean look for a food establishment. On top of that, several male employees had extremely long, unkempt beards. I’m not against beards — but in food service, grooming standards exist for a reason. Trim it, maintain it, or cover it.

Table sanitation was honestly shocking. When guests left, tables and seats were not properly cleaned. Instead of using sanitizer and a cloth, multiple servers used their bare hands to brush crumbs off tables, then immediately sat new guests there. One server wiped only one side of a table and left the rest untouched. That’s not cleaning — that’s cutting corners, and it’s disgusting.

Another issue: why were the majority of servers just standing around the host stand? This isn’t playtime. The lobby area is small and compact, yet employees were congregating there while dirty tables sat untouched and guests waited. It created chaos and an uncomfortable environment.

The manager on duty appeared completely clueless. At one point, I watched the manager staring up at the ceiling, walking past dirty tables, and doing absolutely nothing to help the floor staff. A manager’s job is to lead by example, and what I saw was someone setting their store up for failure.

Perhaps the most telling part of the experience was the overall atmosphere. Nearly every guest around us looked unhappy and miserable at their tables. That alone says everything you need to know.

I’m in my 30s, and I’ve worked at multiple food chain restaurants over the years. I understand how restaurants function. I understand bad days. This was not just a “busy day” or an off moment — this was a complete lack of standards across the board.

I already know I’m going to get an automated response saying, “We’re so sorry your experience wasn’t the best.” But there’s no fix for this unless serious changes are made. Do better — or close up shop. Because this location is hurting the First Watch name.

I will not be returning to this location, and I would not recommend it to anyone.

I have tried quite a few options on the menu and have never been disappointed by the flavor. They are always consistent and I continuously notice how above and beyond their team goes for their guests. Even during their busiest times, their team bands together and maintains a high moral and positivity.

As soon as we walked in, the atmosphere wasn’t just warm and welcoming, it was inviting and felt comfortable which is more than most restaurants can say they have. The staff took AMAZING care of us, our server Jewel was phenomenal and Tim was just downright an amazing guy. Our food was ready in record time and was well worth that small wait. It’s safe to say I’ll be coming back here cause it’d be a shame to let such an amazing place sit in the back of my mind.
