Service is bad, food is terrible terrible terrible. Beers are ok. I didn’t even get my fries I ordered but got charged. Will not go back or recommend others to go.
Many thanks to Max and everyone at Ornery Public House in Fairfax City for helping my wife give me a great party.
Great experience! Especially after walking out of the previous establishment for poor service! Very casual atmosphere... Our server, Rachel, was so polite and eager to please. The beers were fabulous. I had an IPA and a Stout! Wow! Both of them were delicious! Also it was Happy hour and we got a $2 discount for each beer. This is definitely the new hangout for me and my friends!
Excellent food and service. Had the wings and Goat pizza. Faith was great! We’ll be back!
So the flash fried Brussel sprouts with honey and red pepper flakes are genius. Might be the 2nd best Brussel sprouts i have ever had. I love Brussel sprouts. Perfectly cooked. Sweet of honey and slight heat of the pepper flakes actually brought dish over the top. The jagerschnitzel was good. Like maybe the 4th or 5th best. Well maybe not. Schnitzel was adequately pounded properly breaded as well. The mushroom gravy overpowered the dish with blandness. It needs some apple sweetness for typical schnitzel. Or some pepper flavor. Any flavor would have made it better. The beets were the best part of the dish. I love asparagus but it was disguised in the dish. It was hidden under everything. And it was not necessary but ok. Potatoes were good. A potato pancake might help wrap dish together better with some onion and apple in the Shred. It would tie it together better. The gravy took away from the dish. A spiced apple sauce might have been better flavored with one of your fruit tart beers. The service was great. The bartender gave great help and allowed tastings of different beers. The rise lager was good. Bad with the schnitzel. Lord Vader Imperial stout is S or A tier. Chalice of Goliath Barleywine was strong and well flavored but it is not as good as other American brewery barleywines. I prefer 3 Floyd's barleywine behemoth. Berlin pop was the strangest berliner Weiss that I have ever tasted. I wanted to explore it but knew it was not palatable with the schnitzel. The Fuzzy logic also had good flavors.
Awesome. As always. The salmon Benedict rocks. The pizza is always good. Had the Guadilijara today. Awesome.
Service was awful One diner had their meal delivered 44 minutes before the rest of us. It took 45 minutes to get the rest of our meal.
Showed up, sat at the bar for 10 minutes, and left when I never saw an employee.
Food was "meh" at best. Ordered the queso and tortillas. The queso was greasy/oily to no end. Could tell they probably didn't drain the beef after it was cooked. Steak Frites were ok. Fries that came with it, terrible. Cold, unseasoned mushy fries. Beer selection was fair, but def won't be going back.
Beer's are solid, can't really go wrong with any selection. I wouldn't say they have truly unique beers but they hit each of the big beer categories and they are made well.
Food is also fine. Wouldn't call it fine dining but it's solid americana food.
Service is fast and efficient. I've gone here 4 times in the last 2 years. One time we had to walk out because they were overwhelmed with customers and didn't serve us for 15 minutes at our table (having a two year old with us, this delay was a death sentence). The other three times the service has been fast at taking our orders and getting food and drinks to us.
We'll continue to attend the establishment once or twice a year.
Restaurantji Recommends
Positives: The staff was great and attentive. The restaurant has a good atmosphere's and it’s clean. The fried pickles were also good.
Negatives: I ordered Steak Frites, and on a plate of Steak, Fries and Salad, the steak was by far the worst thing. Very little seasoning, drenched in oil from the chimichurri sauce that had no acidity to cut through all that grease. Very disappointed with it. The beer was okay. I bit more bitter than I expect for non IPA beers. Would love to see IBU units for the beers on the menu.
Adding to my review below from 2015! Ornery still has great beer, great service and great food! I recently was here with a large group with several kids and our waiter was awesome and great with the kids!

Great beer in a great location with free parking. Highly recommend their shrimp and grits!
If you like Ornery Beer, you are better off going to their Tap Room in Manassas. The service at the Brewery in Fairfax is tanking hard, and sticky floors. Used to go there regularly, not anymore. Commonwealth and High Side are around the corner, go there. The taproom is good.
Multiple beers on the menu that they don’t have (and know it)
Food is good.
Bathrooms nasty.
The food and beer were both good, and the service was attentive from the start. They were accommodating with our dogs on the patio, providing water and a friendly atmosphere. Overall, it’s a solid choice for a meal, especially if you’re looking for a dog-friendly spot.
