My husband I visited Casanel as part of our Anniversary weekend in December. It was our first visit to Casanel Winery and we really enjoyed the experience. Theresa and her team were fantastic! We had a lovely tasting of good wines, enjoyed a glass of wine by the fire and toured the facility. There are patios to enjoy the beautiful scenery and the tasting room is spacious and a great event space. We can't wait to return!

Super short version: Great winery with good service that is also not rowdy. Fantastic place to go for a glass or three of quality wine in relative peace and quiet.Short version: Casanel, a small family owned winery, simply put our favorite winery bar none. Notable for their Cabernet Sauvignon (hard to grow in Virginia) and their Petit Verdot, all of their wines every year have been good to great. Service is good, pricing is fair and reasonable considering the market, and the atmosphere is welcoming and warm. They do allow dogs and food outside, but do enforce a no dog and no outside policy indoors, in part to ensure that there always is a place that is quieter for those who seek it.Long version: My wife and I judge wineries on three scales - quality of the wine, quality of the service, and other (which includes the views, value for price, food options, etc).Wine Quality - Casanel wine has been consistently good to great in spite of difficult years. Although they have had a change in wine makers, the samples we have tasted of the product that their new wine maker Adam has produced, I believe, will continue their reputation for quality. While many of these produced by Adam are not yet available for sale, they also have a strong library of wines that are well worth checking out and, we believe, value for money. That said, our pallet tends to lean toward the dry reds (PV, Cab Sauv, and others), but they also produce a Chardonnay that has gone through malolactic fermentation and lightly oaked, producing a flavorful wine that is not a butter bomb. They also produce a few other whites and reds that are also worth a visit, including Norton (both still and as a bubbly), a Carmenere (an all but lost burgundy grape), and Pinot Gris in several styles. In the warmer months, they also have several roses including last year an orange wine (based on a white wine made like a red). And that is about half of their offerings. If I had to say that they had a weakness in this category, it would be that they don’t have that much to offer sweet wine drinkers, but they do have an option or two.Service - The Casanel winery team does all they can to create a warm, welcoming environment to their guests and, being that we are frequent visitors, they have become our winery home away from home. Notable is Theresa, the operations manager who with her team handles the front of the house. Victoria does a great job keeping interesting events going on. Nelson, the owner, is a character with great passion for the US - while you may not always agree with his views, you certainly will never question his love of what his hard work and the opportunities of this nation have granted him. Elliotte does a thousand jobs including helping with communications and the website. And one cannot go on without mentioning Anna - the general manager who quite literally is the glue that keeps everything going. Hers is a thankless job of putting out fires, dealing with difficult customers, and ensuring that her team (mentioned or not) have the resources to have all run smoothly. If Casanel had a weakness in this area, it would be that this is not a place for loud drunken parties nor a place for children and animals to run unrestrained or without supervision - but to us, that is a strength and not a weakness.Other - As noted above, this is a catchall category for us. Casanel’s main tasting room was hand built by its owner, and the secondary tasting room is a historical structure. Both are lovely as are the grounds. While the wine is a bit pricey, the quality is there and therefore in our books represents a good value. Further, there are a number of efforts that occur behind the scenes that also contribute to the experience. Be it from the vineyard crew who manage to keep the vines healthy and attractive in spite of weather and pests thus allowing quality fruit to be had to the production staff ensuring that quality never fails, there is significant effort that goes into the bottle before it is labeled.

Loved visiting this winery! Charming & cozy...loved their Petit Verdot! I'm planning to return in the warmer months to enjoy the back patio with view of the lake & vineyards! Teresa was awesome! Great welcoming personality! Thank you!

If you're looking for a special winery closeby to Ashburn/Leesburg that has both a beautiful outdoor and indoor ambience, with an assortment of delicious wines, I highly recommend Casanels Vineyard & Winery. Only by chance when searching for a winery that offered a live vocalist to celebrate my Mom's 89th bday, did I choose Casanels; now i say i was divinely guided bc everyone who came to Mom's bday celebration agreed that they will like to visit Casanels again!Jessica Pauline was absolutely the perfect vocalist, singing a variety of 60s & 70s songs our group of ~30 enjoyed. What was also unique was hearing from Theresa, the owner Nelson's neice, that we could bring food to serve; thus, allowing me to bring a lot of food for F&F who came near and far to enjoy this party along with the wine selections.Theresa was very friendly & accommodating by setting aside Nelson's beautiful hand crafted tables next to the fireplace so we could spread out our food and later bday cake.Another nice highlight to our visit was listening to Theresa & Nelson share the history of how Casanels started 15 years ago when Nelson and his wife Casey built all from nothing on 32 acres of this land. Meeting & talking with Theresa, Nelson and with the very friendly staff certainly was an extra positive highlight of our perfect bday celebration for my Mom!Thank you Nelson & Theresa, and we look forward to visiting Casanels again very soon!Sincerely,Carolyn Whitescarver

This past weekend we were lucky enough to have our baby shower at Casanel Vineyards & Winery - it was a dream come true. We had initially met with Theresa Church before the event to look at the space and taste the wine. We were blown away by her hospitality, the delicious wine (not to mention the history behind it) and the beautiful scenery. It really felt like Theresa cared and listened to everything we were looking for. Her service throughout the experience was exceptional. She was attentive and was there for us every step of the way.Our guests from that evening bought wine to take home and are still talking about the baby shower and how wonderful everything turned out. We couldn't be happier.

My wife and I met the owner, Nelson, and some of his family at a restaurant several months ago. He was so nice and enthusiastic that we went to Casanel for a visit. We live in Loudoun and have been to many but not all of the wineries. As a result of our experience, we decided to become members. The wines are very good. Some of the whites are exceptional. The tasting room and the grounds are very nice. It is a beautiful and relaxing setting with lots of areas for privacy. We even volunteered to pick grapes last weekend. Yes, it is work, but if you have never done it, it is quite interesting and rewarding. We are treated like family now and it is an amazing place. The owner and his family work extremely hard to make a visit a special time. I can't wait to go back.

Beautiful property. We ordered two flights of wine. There was live music and different patios to sit and chill. There is also a nice big pond and you can sit on that patio and feel peaceful. Please visit.

Considering the comprehensive tasting line-up, this is now my favorite winery on the east coast. Additionally, the property is beautiful and the staff is very warm and welcoming. You won't regret visiting this location

We went to this winery for a combined experience of Mothers Day + a surprise birthday and we couldn't have been more thankful. We only had time to stop at one winery so I did a lot of research. Theresa and her team got back to me immediately and were just beyond helpful. They arranged a time for our tasting, a speciality "bundtini" pairing and a space on the back patio overlooking the gorgeous scenery. When we arrived, they were waiting for us with a sign and a smile. The entire crew from start to finish was a joy.I am a global event planner and experience hospitality all over the world and this was one of my top experiences! Can't wait to go back again!XO

Winery is beautiful and staff is very friendly. The only thing I would recommend is expand your menu. There are so many different foods that pair great with wine beyond cheese and crackers. Perhaps some hot foods? Property is beautiful.

I was hoping to find some dry VA sparkling wines, but I guess it won’t be from here, since you can’t try them before you buy. At $55 a bottle, I’d like to know what it tastes like before buying.
