The server tried her best, but there was a very loud table that rendered our evening conversationless. Not the restaurant's fault. The bread was good! The meat was decent. The sides were disappointing. Dessert was good. But overall, for the price, we expected a much better meal.
In a small town with diminishing restaurant choices, Haywood's offers a nice atmosphere, but the food is fair and expensive.
The food and service are excellent. Prices are somewhat exorbitant. That's why we only go once a year to celebrate. Dinner for 2 of salad, glass of wine, pasta entree and dessert plus tip and tax came to $190.
Our 7 p.m. dinner was a mixed bag. The positives: we were immediate seated. Then, when (see below) we got food, the tuna bruschetta, clam bisque and pork chops were incredible. The rib eye was excellent. We enjoyed the vibe of the restaurant and the piano player. The negatives: after being seated, no one checked on our party of 5 for awhile-- it was noticeable particularly because the restaurant was not fully crowded. When the waitstaff did check on us, we ordered drinks and appetizers. then, we waited a long while (maybe 15 minutes), before having two appetizers served (the third, the Ceaser Salad, was delivered later-- after the first two appetizers but before the main course). THEN, after we finished our first two appetizers, we were asked if we wanted a main course (note, we had 3 appetizers for a party of 5-- yes! we were there for dinner). We were never offered bread (we asked after our main course when we saw some offered to another table and were told they were out earlier). We debated desert, but were give the bill before we asked to about the options. We were verbally told three options (maybe they not do a desert menu?). Given the lateness, we decided to skip desert even though some sounded interesting. In addition, one negative about the food. I had the fried duck which was a disappointment-- I was not asked how I wanted it prepared and it came out medium-well. Maybe, because it was pan fried, choosing medium/medium rare duck was not an option, but I grew up being able to state a preferred temperature. Maybe this was or was not the reason, but the duck was tough-- to cut and chew. Given the high price of this meal, these negatives outweighed the positives.
My wife and it go to Haywood's every year between Christmas and New Years, it has become our tradition. However, this year the service was off. First, we were in the back of the restaurant, and we prefer to be up front in the piano room. This wasn't a big deal and my just be reflective of when I made the reservation. Perhaps I need to make the reservation a few weeks in advance. The worst part was the service. Everything started out OK, quick seating, quick drink service, taking our order. But when we were finished our meal, we waited almost 20 minutes before the waitress ever came back to the table. She never even made eye contact or check on us. We had to flag down another staff member to get our waitress to come to our table. This was the worst experience we've ever had at Haywood's in the years we've been coming. My wife actually suggested we go somewhere else next year, but I want to keep coming to Haywood's. I hope this feedback is taken with some urgency and we can look forward to coming back again soon, perhaps not wait until next holiday season.
Had a reservation and showed up 20 minutes early and were seated right away. Oredered appetizer, dinner and dessert along with a few cocktails. Our service and the food were fantastic. We enjoyed our meal and listened to the piano player. I recommend and would return to this restaurant!
I lovely spot for our 57th wedding anniversary!! The music was terrific and the food and service were equally good. A great night.
Absolutely fantastic brunch. We make a visit annually around our anniversary as my wife says it's the best eggs Benedict she's had. Sadly, the piano man deserves a day off and we missed him. Steak and eggs was also awesome. Thank you Lisa!
My wife and grandson agreed with me that our meal at Haywood's was among the best we had ever had. The food was thoughtfully prepared and the portions were just right. Our server was attentive. The piano music and the overall setting was a big plus.
Live this place. I was visiting from NYC but the food was worth going back.

Haywoods is centrally located in downtown Lexington, VA and has a relaxed, but upscale setting, featuring relaxing piano music while eating. There were three in our party and all three agreed that our meals were about the best we had ever eaten.
Resy for 2 put comments celebrating anniversary (was never mentioned during our dinner) upon entering @ 4:57 for 5:00 resy was abruptly told by hostess that the restaurant did not open until 5pm. Seated promptly at 5pm, waitress was extremely soft spoken & difficult to understand & how difficult it was to order as we had to inquire if options were available as it seemed difficult for the waitress to share this information. Chowder served barely warm, ribeye not a lot of flavor with tasteless spinach as a side, the filet entree was very good, overall I would have to say we would not return for service needs to be more professional as I don't need my waitress to call me sweety or honey for the prices I will gladly pay for professional service & presentation & taste overall but this establishment did not deliver
Very intimate and cozy, but also fun listening to the piano music and talking with other patrons.
We loved the ambiance at Haywood's- excellent food and service! Reservations recommended. The bone-in pork chop was delicious, and so was the filet mignon, both cooked to perfection and juicy. The filet was rather pricey. The wonderful experience was totally enhanced by the jazz pianist and bass player. Delightful!!! We will return!
The food was fabulous and the service was excellent. This is an expensive place to eat, but for a splurge, it was worth the price.
