We have been here 3 times! The first 2 experiences were great! Tonight it was horrible. Terrible service!! The food was okay, not as good as the other 2 times. A drink was spilled on my husband. The waitress was not attentive at all. We had to go and physically find her and ask for what we needed. All of the servers we had in the past were wonderful!! When I ordered I told them to cook my daughter's chicken nuggets and fries lightly. They were burnt and I was still charged for them even though she didn't eat them. When you spend $100 for 3 people, you should walk out happy! Total waste of money for Father's day dinner. The food also made me sick immediately. We won't be back!! Do better if you wanna charge these prices.

Hidden gem in Mechanicsville. This was our first time dining here, won’t be our last. It was surprisingly empty, but it was a Wednesday evening. We were the only patrons in the restaurant at the time, so the waitress was very attentive. The menu is extensive and has a great variety in comparison to other basic Mexican fares. The portions of the dinner plates we ordered were huge. They are literally served on a serving platter not a regular sized dinner plate. The entrees came with French fries, which is what influenced my choice. The rice was nice and fluffy. The ranchero sauce on my filete de pescado was amazingly flavorful with the right amount of spice. The fish was properly cooked. However, the drinks are pricey- the margaronas/coronaritas are 17$. I am surprised by the negative reviews because we enjoyed our dinner and are excited to be coming back to try the Botanas specialties.

I really want to love this restaurant, it's got a diverse menu that is not just like every other Mexican restaurant in town. I've eaten there twice in about a six week period because I know that everywhere can have a bad day or week so I didn't want to pass judgement after one visit. I'm going to talk about both the good and bad.The good: both times we've eaten at the restaurant The food was great and our orders were correct. We didn't experience any issues with cold food but both times the food didn't come out together. The drinks are also great, not going to lie it's the best Michelada I've ever had.The bad: This restaurant is so slow! Last night we arrived shortly after 730pm and didn't get out of the restaurant until after 930pm. We did not order any seafood or family platters. We had a party of 6 and there was one large party that was there when we got there and a few other parties of 2 and some people at the bar. Based on seating I would estimate 15-20% full. We had two waiters that were tag teaming our table. Not a problem generally but it led to confusion and is he getting you water, did you order drinks, anyone get your food order? Both waiters were very nice but our basic drink orders were messed up and we did have two cocktails ordered and only one was delivered and after waiting 20 minutes for the other we were told that the other drink wasn't put in the system. I will say the drinks are very expensive too (but tasty). Their drink menu has all pricing covered with a sharpie, hmmm.We had a small basket of chips and a shot glass size of watery salsa brought to the table for 6 people. They brought more if we asked but we often went long periods of time before seeing a waiter again. After about an hour and 15 minutes I was inquiring about our food status. They told me they had no idea when it would be ready because the place was so busy (15-20% full) and they only had one cook (real reason). The waiter said would you want some fresh guacamole while you wait? We said sure that would be great. After about 15 minutes and us asking about the guac status the waiter went to the fridge in the bar and pulled out a molcajete with guacamole that had guac all up the sides and the appearance it was the remanets of another customers order. We didn't get any chips with this and we hade only crumbs remaining in our basket but I didn't say anything about the state of the guac or the lack of chips because the waiter was trying to make things right and give us free guac .....Well we were charged $10.50 for fresh tableside guac on our bill (hardly).After about an hour and 40 minutes we get our food brought to us over a period of about 10 minutes 1 or 2 meals at a time. The food was great but we couldn't eat as a family and everyone was more than ready to go at this time.We are finally done and the check service was quick but then is when I discovered the we got charged for the "fresh table side guacamole" and for some reason my daughter's burrito which was ordered straight off the mene had an addition charge of $1 for rice/beans. Note that the burrito comes by itself without sides and we didn't order any nor did we receive any. I inquired with the waiter what that charge was for and I was told because the burrito has rice and beans in it. I agreed and said the menu does say so but why are you charging me the menu price and then an upcharge. I was told I would need to talk to the manager. Same response when I inquired about the guacamole charge. I opted to not talk to the manager as at this point we were there for 2 hours and I chalked it up as a loss.The very high prices, very slow service, ok atmosphere, out weigh the great food in my opinion. Again I want to really like this restaurant, if I hear things are better I will try again but I've had two disappointing experiences and not looking for a third.

The server that we had, must of been new to the job. When the food came out, it was missing some of the order and we had to ask where is the rest of the order. We asked if they had some avocados and they said no, which made us think ? a Mexican restaurant that don't serve avocados. We asked for cold beer ? we where serve medium cold beer. For the real large platters of sea food, they want around $200.00 dollars. We can go to captain George in Williamsburg for $80.00 dollars for all you can eat buffet. I will not be going back to this place again.
