Disappointing evening, particularly so because of the 4 course prix fixe requirement. Fig tart was served cold and 2nd course of bisque was lukewarm. Sea Scallops were OK, just a little too salty. Duck was nicely prepared with crispy Brussels sprouts. Desserts continued the theme of underwhelming - chocolate pot de crème was passable but nectarine crème cake looked and tasted like it was meant to be served on an airline. Several good qualities about Red Fox: the ambiance was unique and ideal for a celebratory dinner; the service was friendly and knowledgeable (and apologetic); and the Virginia wine pairings were surprisingly good. For the price and historic charm of the restaurant, the kitchen needs to do much better.
This was a birthday dinner celebration with a prix fixed menu. We chose the Virginia Piedmont Ribeye, Braised Quail Arancini, Roasted Fig & Maitake Tartlet, Spiced Pear & Butternut Salad, Cheese plate, and for dessert, Nectarines & Cream Cheese Cake. All courses were explained, and we enjoyed every bite. Thank you, Patrick P.
Four course meal was delightful- savory dishes were on point. Cornbread and amuse bouche were a delightful surprise. Scallop ceviche and vichyssoise were nice, best item was the red snapper with the corn risotto and my friend's rabbit was also very tasty. The only thing that was a surprise miss was dessert. While the previous 3 courses were well balanced and delicious my chocolate dessert was heavy and dense that I didn't even try to finish it. I was expecting a light chocolate mouse but I had to dig hard to pull it and it just didn't end the meal well. My friends dessert was also lacking the cream cheese in her cake was overpowering would have been better with something lightly whipped like marscapone or whip cream.
Food was fantastic. Wine pairing didn't necessarily match each course selection I made, but each glass was delicious and enjoyable. Service was also great. Would absolutely visit again.
Quaint historic setting with amazing food. Started with warm rosemary cornbread which were the best I ever had. Scallop and duck perfectly cooked. Will come back to try the rest of the menu!
Wow - the food was truly wonderful! The service was spot on and the ambience was lovely. Such amazing history in that building - felt very special to be able to dine there, and the experience did not disappoint!
Get-away and date night experience! This is our favorite restaurant in the area, so we come for the night, and always look forward to the seasonal prix fixe menus. This is truly a destination experience we love. The Inn and Tavern is a very old/historic building, and we love the welcoming traditional atmosphere. It is clear there is great care and pride in the upkeep preserving a historic building, the gorgeous landscaping, serving excellent food that highlights local fare, and the staff are always on point! It's worth it.
Our server Brenden was amazing. He knew the menu so well and was very kind. We had a nut and black pepper allergy at our table and the chefs/waiters were very accommodating. The food was amazing and the flavors were perfect. It is a beautiful hotel and we will definitely be going back.
We came to celebrate my wife's birthday. We did the four course menu with the wine pairing. The food quality and preparation were outstanding. Where we were left disappointed was in the portions. For example, they took a standard sized meatball for the meatball appetizer and cut it in half. You maybe got two bites of meatball out of it. For the duck entree, they gave four small slices of duck breast. I really can't recommend the wine pairing. They told us up front that they were 1/2 glass pours, but it really seemed like less than that. I would come back and eat upstairs at the a la carte restaurant, but I can't see us doing the four course meal again. Total cost for two was about $550 w/tip.
Very nice meal in a quiet and gracious setting. The staff was enthusiastic and skilled. The food was nicely prepared and presented and the menu had lots of interesting choices. Also worked well for those with dietary restrictions.

We had a 4:30 reservation, so the restaurant was understandably quiet. We were very disappointed in both the Chardonnay by the glass and the English Ale (which was carbonated!). The cauliflower and leak soup was quite bitter, but we did enjoy both the scallops and the lamb.
Now one of our favorite 'special' places to dine. Our family loves history and this place is steeping with history. But that's just the beginning. The waitstaff is very professional and rarely keeps you waiting (Jason is awesome!). The food was more of an upscale type of restaurant, better than we were expecting. The drink options were tremendous as well. All, right in the heart of Middleburg, a quaint historic town not far from the Ashburn, VA area. We definitely want to visit again!
Excellent presentation and wonderfully delicious three course meal and wine pairing. Exceptional hospitality and service by Sebastian. Could easily be Michelin rated. Highly recommend. Great way for us to celebrate our anniversary.
The oldest in of the United States. Jackie Kennedy stayed there and and the NBC series The West Wing It was filmed there. The food and ambience was Gourmet exquisite. Everything was very tasty surprise. The waiter couldn't be more helpful and knowledgeable. The only thing that made me surprised was that the after dinner drink chartreuse was not available at the bar.
With the exception of one year due to COVID, for 9 years at the end of March we make our trip to the Tavern. The meals are always excellent. The acoustics in the rooms make it loud when there is are substantial patrons but what can you do when the ceilings are 8 foot and the walls are stone. I always have given 5 stars, but this year I just cannot. While the staff was very polite, I was annoyed to be going to a restaurant of this caliber and find the waiter reaching across me from my right to take or replace plates or silverware. He said "pardon me for reaching in front of you" every time, but that is not what I expect at the Red Fox. It is a petty small thing to get annoyed with, but I just expect more from this establishment.
