Service and food were impeccable as it has been on prior visits. Definitely will be returning.

Fifth or sixth visit and first lackluster experience. Booked bar seating for my wife, 11 year old son, and myself because the service is always better. The host told us that VA ABC doesn't allow children to sit at the bar, which we looked up on the spot, and it's not a law. He spoke with the manager and the manager said it was their policy, not ABC policy, but the whole back and forth was pretty awkward. They didn't have any other seating available except for a table upstairs that we could have for one hour until another reservation, or a table in the basement speakeasy, which we went with. We found it funny that our son couldn't sit at the bar but the speakeasy was no problem. The room was actually rather inviting, but the whole back and forth on the original seating plans left a bad taste. The start of service was fine, drinks came pretty quickly. We ordered oysters for the first time here, which I wouldn't recommend. They were served on a salt bed instead of ice and were room temp when we got them. They smelled okay so my son and I ate most of them, but we definitely prefer chilled seafood. As the restaurant started to fill up we felt like a bit of an afterthought to the wait staff. Plates piled up on our table, drinks went unfilled, and we were only checked in on once during dinner service without having to flag down the waiter. My son ordered a Caesar salad for dinner, which was as good as the ones we've had here previously. My rack of lamb and my wife's filet both seriously lacked salt, as did the Au gratin potatoes. I usually never ask for salt or pepper at a higher end restaurant, but was forced to do so to make the meal less bland. Overall, for a multi hundred dollar dinner experience I feel like it really lacked the depth of service and flavor that we have come to expect when dining out. Again, I want to reiterate this was our fifth or sixth time here and our first not so great experience. Maybe try and go on a slower night.

First timer. The food was quite good. Noise level a bit elevated due, I'm sure, to hardwood floors and exposed brick walls. Will certainly go back even though a bit pricey.

We celebrated New Years Eve upstairs in the bar area at a high top table. Riley, our server, was extraordinary! The food was so delicious. We enjoyed the festive decorations and atmosphere! Great way to ring in the New Year!!!

1870 is an excellent restaurant. The only issues we had while dining out was the presentation of the meal. I would have expected the presentation to be a little more than what was delivered. We also had an issue with one of the dishes (salmon) being under cooked, needing a return to the kitchen for more time in the oven. The service was top shelf!

Great place for date night! Food was excellent and service was outstanding! Riley was our server and I can't say enough good things about her!!!

The seasonal soup was exceptional, the steaks were cooked perfectly, the flounder was very good and we all shared and enjoyed the sauces and the sides. We were seated and served quickly - the staff was pleasant and polite

It was our Anniversary celebration, and everything was perfect. My steak and my wife's salmon were fixed to perfection. Serving by Stella was first class.

Was a wonderful evening. Seated right away, waiter was right there. He was great, very personable and helpful. Food was prepared perfectly and was delicious and well presented. Did not feel rushed. There were a lot of people there, but the noise was not too much and it was a lively and comfortable setting. We really enjoyed our evening and will go back.

We have eaten here multiple times and we always come away satisfied. The food is excellent and the service has always been top notch. I had the filet and at gratin potatoes and both were amazing. We will return!!

Loved the casual atmosphere combined with an upscale menu. The cocktails, apps and entrees were fantastic but the sides (broccoli and green beans) were a bit too undercooked. I love my veggies with some bite to them but these needed an extra minute or two. The service was on point. Desserts were lovely and I will definitely be back.
