James's knowledge was encyclopedic. It was like having the chef and sommelier at the table.
The food was excellent all around. We had:
- shrimp risotto with olives and calabrian peppers
- bao buns
- fois gras
- halibut croquettes
- cheesecake
The food was a+. No notes. No complaints. Will return when back in the area.

Circa is our go to date night spot. Kip, James and Joey make me and my wife feel like family! Everything is excellent and having a restaurant this good in our backyard is a dream!

Gem of Newport News. Stylish interior, tasteful everything, not just the food. Not a bad dish or cocktail was had, and we had the octopus, the bao, the grilled bread, the scallops, and a complementary cauliflower creation that tasted incredibly close to chicken. Parking can be found in the nearby neighborhood for free. Kip and all the servers made you feel right at home. Top notch!

We don't get out much at night but with my husband in the hospital I decided to come here after having lunch next door in between hospital visits. Boy oh boy was I happy that I did. I can't say much about the atmosphere because I didn't go past the front door and decided to sit outside. It was a good choice since it was a beautiful night. I had a few choices from the menu in mind but when Kip the general manager started telling me the specials. As soon as he mentioned the word short rib I told him to go no further. I didn't care how it was prepared or what it accompanied, decision made. It was definitely the right one. While waiting for my meal I was brought out treat from the chef. It was something in a puff pastry. I didn't really care what it was. It was delicious. It only made me more eager for my entree to come. I can't wait to return with my husband.

Excellent experience at Circa 1918! My wife and I went for the first time and we were impressed. Chef Troy and his team knocked it out of the park. Everything was delicious! Great atmosphere. Our server, and GM, Kip, was super personable and made us feel very welcome. Highly recommend Circa 1918.

Great experience, amazing staff, we sat at the bar and the bartender was supremely nice and knowledgeable. The food was so good! Like amazingly good! The seating area is small and I recommend you get a reservation, they do reserve the bar seating too, so we got lucky because we went as soon as they opened.

Amazing food and drinks. The service is also excellent. Definitely one of the (or according to my wife THE) best restaurants in Newport News! We will be back soon!

I have dined all over world and I must say that Circa 1918 is an extraordinary restaurant. We had the lobster bisque soup which was a special offering for the evening, sweet snap pea salad, the Beef Wagyu New York Strip Steak, the Bison Carmelized Onion Meatloaf, and the Halibut special. I must say that the meal was excellent. The stand out was the Beef Wagyu NY Strip Steak. It was unbelievably, melt-in-your-mouth, tender. The wait staff was wonderfully knowledgeable and attentive. Our wine was delicious. If you are ever in the Newport News area, run don’t walk to this amazing dining experience. You won’t be disappointed!!

We’ve been here three times now and each time has been terrific. The food is amazing every single time and presented beautifully while still giving you a normal amount of food (looking at you, other nice restaurants serving plates with one bite worth of food). Drinks, appetizers, and desserts are great too! A bit on the pricier side but it’s totally worth it for the high quality food that you get.
Dinner for 4 did not disappoint. Inventive & tasty meatloaf, lamb, duck & tuna. Watermelon ’sushi’ bite was a tasty surprise.
Craft drinks prepared well. Attentive staff. The space is snug but not uncomfortable. Found parking down the street. We’ll have to go back & see if we can repeat the experience. It’s a nice find in Newport News.

The calf is out of this world. Once you go once or twice, they know you by name and treat you as if you’re part of the family. Don’t sleep on the cocktails at the bar. Their staff works extra hard to come up with unique ideas and tastings. If you’re a whiskey fan, they have an exceptional Whiskey with that changes regularly, including cocktails that Bob Whiskey. Ask them about the Shoyu cocktail or the new espresso old fashioned. James is the best when it comes to these specialty cocktails. Kip manages front of the house in a way that you feel at home when stopping in but welcomed like they’ve missed you while you’ve been gone for a bit. Stop in once, stop in over and over again!
