Very disappointed with the food here. We went for my daughter's birthday and all 7 of us left unsatisfied.
Starting with our She-crab Soup, it had so much sherry in it you could barely eat it. And some amongst our party didn't it it. Seriously was the worst She-crab Soup I've ever tried.
I got the Stuffed Flounder and it was just very tasteless, even the bearnaise sauce was bland. The Baked Potato......you mean the bland potato.
All 7 of us were not happy and left very unimpressed. Not sure we'll be back.
Service and atmosphere were great though, for what it's worth.

The restaurant has a very nice environment, clean, well-maintained, and inviting. I was excited to visit, but unfortunately the food did not meet my expectations.
The waitress recommended a crab appetizer, but it mostly tasted like mayonnaise with just a hint of crab, served with toast. For the price, it didn’t feel worth it. For the main course, I asked if I could share with my husband since I don’t eat much, but I felt a bit pressured to order two plates. We ended up ordering seafood with French fries (included) and cheese bread as an extra side.
The portion size was decent for two people, but the food was quite bland. I didn’t finish the appetizer, fries, or cheese bread. Overall, while the place itself is pleasant, the flavors and value didn’t stand out. I’m not sure if I would return.

The Visit NN Magazine advertises this place as a spot to get steamed blue crabs. Just called and they only have snow crab legs.
Loved it ! The food was good and atmosphere was great.

It took over an hour to get our food. When the food came out, it was cold. The waitress had an attitude. The Manager was embarrassed because the cooks called out sick.

My first impression was good from the atmosphere and the ocean view. We arrived at 2:30 pm and after placing our order 2 other tables were seated after us. We waited almost an hour for our food while watching everyone from the other 2 tables get served all their food. We were only a party of 3 and didn't order a crazy amount. The waitress never checked on us at all except to give me the bill. The food was average and the only dish that was worth the visit would be the calamari. I was very disappointed overall. I probably won't go back.

The food was well seasoned and the portion sizes weren't lacking. The wait staff could have been more attentive, but not a deal breaker for us. The restaurant sits right along the water, so it's the perfect place for a date night. I would definitely patronize The Crab Shack on the Jsmes again.

While the restaurant sits on a lovely view of the river, the food was not worth the price. DO NOT GET THE SHE CRAB SOUP!!! Crab Cakes are small and the Crab Dip was awful. Note. There is a required 18% tip.

Sorely disappointed in this visit. Let’s start with the good: We didn’t have a wait because it was a weekday and we arrived at 5p. We were greeted warmly. The views of the James River were excellent, as always. Drinks arrived quickly (though there wasn’t a drink menu, just a placard of current cocktail drinks). Our server was friendly and the bathrooms were clean. Cons: the food. We ordered SheCrab soup, a pound of oysters and a pound of steamed shrimp. The SheCrap was a great flavor but did not have a single bit of crabmeat in it! I am willing to pay a hefty $ for SheCrab soup because it comes with lump crab meat, however this was not the case here. The oysters arrived on a plate only (see photo) and were room temperature. In all of my years, I have never received a plate of raw oysters that weren’t on a bed of ice and weren’t chilled. We ate them quickly so that they wouldn’t get any warmer and at this moment, we are just hoping not to get sick! The steamed shrimp tasted decent, with no problems, but I have had fresher options at other local seafood restaurants. I don’t think I’ll be back any time soon…there are just better options!

Ordered a pound of shrimp. Looked to be about half a pound. Asked server to double check to make sure. Came back said is was a pound and “looks can be deceiving” took her word for it since I haven’t order shrimp in while. I’ve order a pound of shrimp about a dozen times since at various restaurants near Hampton since then. I definitely did not receive a pound that evening. We left very disappointed and still hungry after two entrees and the shrimp. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone. The only thing they got going for the view of the river. Watch out cause this place will rip you off if you’re not paying attention. Considering going back and brining a food scale to check it, but I probably won’t be wasting my time and money at this tourist trap of an establishment.
