Torn about this one.
The ambiance and service were great. You really feel like you stepped back in time, and into Europe, when you cross the door.
The goulash and potato leek soup were good, but not very savory. It was a clean, old world meal. Perhaps more refined palates find it exquisite where I found it lacking.
It is still worth a visit and perhaps try something else.

The food here is very authentic Austrian and Eastern European. This makes it unusual and interesting for the sometimes bored American pallet. Without going into more detail, it is worth a visit. Maybe several visits. Maybe many! Sadly, I am not local, so my visits will be infrequent. But yours should not!

There are Good Restaurants and GREAT Restaurants-Good ones have a competent staff, decent menus, fair pricing for quality. The Monastery, a landmark in Norfolk VA, Is a GREAT Restaurant, seriously. Unique location and atmosphere, subtle decor, a menu that promises delicious adventures and then delivers 100%. Our waiter this time, Michael, knew every detail, offered thoughtful suggestions, and didnt disappoint. But behind every fine Fine Dining Staff is a fabulous kitchen and The Monastery has a 5Star/husband and Wife, Anna, and A, who still, in the 35+years there, serve up culinary miracle after miracle at Local, not Big-City prices. I have literally eaten there 40-50 times in those years and never ever been disappointed, and if for some reason I looked that way accidentally , they were right there to inquire and replace or redo. LOCAL or VISITING, THE MONASTERY on Granby Street, should be on your list of restaurants you can brag about having been to, and never go wrong in recommending! (PS-I always take a ToGo cup of the Real Goulash to savor at home…)
Parking: Usually even at busy times, finding a garage or lot nearby for less $ than one cocktail in any bar in town, is easy

My wife and I were just surfing the web wondering if Norfolk had any good restaurants and we came across this gem. We just entertained ourselves for the past 15 minutes checking out pictures and drooling over the menu.
We haven’t even been here yet and we are in love with your establishment. See you soon and best of health in the meantime.

Incredible, authentic European meals. I had the lamb special, others had schnitzel and steak tartare. Everything was amazing. They make their own cheese and bread as well! Top quality and authentic to German and Czech cuisine. It's the same European food served that will have you leaving satisfied without being over stuffed, even after beer and dessert.

The owners and staff are the most wonderful people. As an Eastern European the food brought me straight back home. If you want an elevated home cooked meal that’s served with love go there! Highly recommend and we will be a regular now .

Our son was stationed in Eastern Europe and wanted to eat somewhere with the food from there and he found Monastery. Our group of 6 was lol very happy with his choice. The food was fantastic but it was the service that made me write a review. Our server was the owner’s brother and he was amazing. Great service and great conversation. I definitely recommend trying Monastery.
