A Disappointing Dip: Philly Style Steak and Subs, What Happened?
This review comes with a heavy heart, as Philly Style Steak and Subs used to be my absolute go-to, a genuine five-star experience that I'd rave about to anyone looking for an authentic taste of Philly in Norfolk. Sadly, my last few visits have been a significant letdown, forcing me to drop my rating to a mere two stars. C'mon, guys, you used to be the best – what gives?
The most noticeable decline has been in the quality of the cheesesteak itself, which is, quite frankly, the main event. The meat, which once sizzled with juicy perfection and was generously piled high, now often feels dry and less flavorful. It's almost as if the passion has gone out of the cooking. The cheese, which used to melt into that glorious, gooey perfection, now sometimes feels barely integrated, sitting on top rather than becoming one with the steak and onions. And the bread – oh, the bread! It used to be perfectly toasted and chewy, the ideal vessel. Lately, it feels either stale or just lacking that crucial bite.
Beyond the food, the overall experience seems to have lost its spark. While I understand places can get busy, the once-friendly and efficient service now feels a bit more detached, almost as if they're just going through the motions. The attention to detail that made the place special seems to have waned. It's not outright bad service, but it's certainly not the welcoming and top-notch experience it once was.
I genuinely hope this is a temporary dip and not a permanent decline. Philly Style Steak and Subs has the potential to be a five-star joint again. But until the quality of the cheesesteaks and the overall care returns to its former glory, it's hard to justify more than two stars. Please, take this as constructive criticism from a once-loyal customer – you can do better, and I hope you will.

Very pleasant and courteous employees, the number of people waiting for their orders tell you that the food is A1.

The best Philly steaks in Norfolk.

I cannot believe that this just happen. I love this restaurant for years, but I must say the quality has went down tremendously ordered my wife a Philly salad and they have no clue of what a Philly salad is anymore. A lot has changed with quality in two weeks.. Staff deal was pleasant, but slow and seem to be untrained not to mention they overalled what they called a salad, which I didn’t order salt at all on it. The picture I posted is literally what they served me untouched. Full transparency they were busy and turned the phones away so that why I couldn’t call them.

Food quality has COMPLETELY gone down. Been going there since I first got stationed in Norfolk…over 30 years. New owners/mgmt must have no taste buds or business sense because this is unacceptable to such a place as this. They let a cornerstone of Norfolk go down like this. Who puts cheese on a hot sub and not melt it. Matter of fact it taste more like cheeze whiz than actual cheese. And the portion of meat compared to times before are long gone. These subs are too expensive for you to skimp on meat like that! And for goodness sake, get rid of the attitudes in the place!! So much for this long time customer coming back!

Well I know it has changed ownership due to the untimely passing of the previous owner, however I expected the quality and customer service to remain the same . As a cheesesteak restaurant I shouldn't have to wait 30 for 2 basic cheesesteaks. There should always be steak on the grill cooking or either warming . How can you as a cheesesteak restaurant that only serves cheesesteak and chicken Philly make a customer wait for 30 minutes and think that is okay. The wait at the most should be 5 minutes and that's if the toppings need to be grilled but then again that should be on the grill warming as well just saying . This was my second time going after the previous owner passed and the first experience was not better but I figured everyone deserves a second chance. This was me giving it a second chance and it will definitely be the last chance. I hope it improves and the new owner succeeds but something's need to change and fast.

It's DISSAPPOINTING, like that meal really fell short! Dry eggrolls, a mix-up on the quantity, and a cheese steak that didn’t even have melted cheese—definitely not what you expect, especially when they weren't busy. It’s always frustrating when you don’t get what you ordered, and at that price, you deserve better. Hopefully, they’ll take my feedback seriously and make some improvements.

Best philly steak I've ever had. I went to Gino's in Philadelphia, the birth place of the philly steak, and this was so much better. The fries were fresh and crispy. Absolutely top tier.

Bread wasn't warm. Meat on sub missing a little bit more seasoning. Not alot of cheese on sub. Subs were good overall.
