Sakura | Japanese Steak House & Sushi Bar

Ordered dinner from them last night, and my husband got food poisoning!! He got the Ramen made with pork broth. Thankfully he didn't eat it all! He had a bit of it and said it just tasted awful so he threw the rest out. Today he woke up throwing up, and with diarrhea and feels miserable. Thank God he didn't eat the whole thing or we would be sitting in the ER right now and he'd be in who knows what condition!

One of my favorite restaurants!

The staff is always very welcoming, and the service is consistently excellent. Their menu is literally beautiful, and the food is delicious. I can’t say enough good things about their appetizers (I really love the calamari and edamame), sushi, and hibachi. It’s all great.

The vibe is fantastic too. The booths are slightly inset and it feels like a semi-private dining experience. It’s one of my favorite places to visit!

This is our "to go" spot for family birthday gatherings. It's a great experience for adults and children. The Hibachi is amazing and never disappoints! Love the Miso Soup and Salad! Love the Shrimp, Steak & Chicken.

First off, very drab atmosphere, dark and untidy. The food was not great at all. Tasted old and almost had no flavor. Also, got sick from it. This is my first and last time here. There are many better sushi options than this one.

Wow what a disgraceful way to embarrass the Japanese cuisine, a load of rice with a bucket of oil and some eggs. Salmon was tasteless just like the shrimps. The “chef” didn’t even try to entertain the table. A very expensive way to eat the worst food that you can try. Never again.

I was worried when I walked in on a Friday night and it was dead...and I learned why quickly! Most unenthusiastic table service I have had at a hibachi grill and I've never had a "chef" cook a steak so poorly! Kept pressing it against the grill as hard as he could making it dry and tough. I highly recommend you avoid this place.

Arrive 5-10 mins after opening, just to be told we needed a reservation for our party of 9 and 2 kids. Needless to say there were no other customers when we arrived. We call back and there wasn’t a straight answer as to why we were turn down. Very disappointed.

We had a great corporate event here. The place is well designed in order to accommodate large or small parties. I was very surprised by how much food we got. The chefs were fun and entertaining. A wide variety of foods and sushi. Lunch specials, too.

Sakura has been here in Richmond for a long time, and we've been there many times over the years. The taste of the food honestly depends on the chef you get - we've been there 3 times in the last couple of months, and 1 time was fantastic, 1 was OK, and the last time the food was not very good. Historically, the food was consistently delicious, which is why we've been willing to pay the 50$ / plate. But recently, a couple of the chefs are not as good as they were in the past - they've mixed up the Steak and the Filet, they've over cooked the scallops and the salmon, they haven't seasoned the food as well, used less butter while cooking and more oil, under-cooked the vegetables, etc. The sushi is still consistently delicious, but the Hibachi is hit and miss. If I go back, I'll be alert to which chef is there, and I'll be sure to get his name for reference. It would be great if the owner/manager of the place sat at a table with guests during each of the chef's work occasionally and identified which chef(s) were under-par.
