Food is wayyy overpriced for what you get and honestly nothing special in terms of flavor or variety. The sides and tortilla were really good but the brisket was super dry and bland. Also the portions were very small for what we ordered and spent. You can find better around richmond if you know where to look

The brisket taco is one of my favorite lunch items in the city right now. $11 and basically a sandwich. Chips and beans are really good for a side item. Seating is outside only.

Interesting the way this place was described to me was that it was a large space that people felt like they could hang out at and my experience was rushed. The employees looked down on me and a few of the people who I was with. I also think it’s worth mentioning that there was an all Masc staff and they were mansplaining to the women I were with as if they were idiots when in reality they were experts in coffee and another really admired the different styles of BBQ in the region. I also cannot eat pork or beef so it was surprising when I was chuckled at when I asked if there was alternatives since the chicken was sold out. Left very disappointing and embarrassed that I needed to apologize to my guest. Won’t be going back.

Recommend lunch/dinner compared to breakfast (breakfast menu is limited). Very small shop, so recommend take out unless it’s nice enough outside to use picnic tables. It is true to the name, the meats are smoky! It’s a preference, some prefer the taste and to others it may be too intense.

Service and drinks are fantastic. The breakfast is MID. Every breakfast menu item I've had has sucked and felt like a waste of money. The BBQ is somewhat better, but can be inconsistently seasoned/dry and the sides? Also MID. The mac & cheese is super wet and the greens are basically dessert sweet. I wanna love this place more, but the food could be much better for the price.

Hi! My husband and I make it a point to find good food and good coffee when we travel. When we can find both and great service, it is a good day. Today in Richmond Virginia, our first coffee shop is The Smoky Mug!
Just the fact that our presence was acknowledged was a plus (so many places do not even say hi) then we were helped by someone who we can tell was tired but did not give us that vibe. He engaged with us and answered our questions.
The vibe here is chill and most importantly the coffee is delicious. We orded the light roast and it did not disappoint. FYI - the lighter the roast the more caffine it has ?

I ate an irresponsible amount of very well-prepared meats and sides that I bought from very nice people, it was a highlight of this stop in Richmond for sure. Big ups.

Y'all was cool with the prices when you first opened up, but $30 for 2 coffees and an elf sized burrito is crazy work.

I'm hoping that things improve when they move to their new spot. Great menu. I especially like their tortillas which are superior to most. Their food size/quantity has reduced in recent times which makes it feel over priced. BBQ is always expensive, but want the burritos to be bigger and more filled out with other ingredients if it's going to be a small portion of meat. The coffee drinks are highly inconsistent. They badly need a trainer or a recipe guide. I order the same thing and it will come out different every time. Drinks aren't stirred, espresso is poured into a plastic cup which melts it. Worst iced coffee cups ever. They're the sip lid kind and they're hard to drink out of on the run. Pay attention or wear a bib. The drinks spill constantly because the plastic cup is so thin. This place is generally inconsistent, but I'm glad it exists.

This a very good place to try (or keep coming back to!). I came for breakfast to discover it’s only a mile from my house. I had the breakfast sandwich on a potato bread bun with maple sage sausage. It was delicious. It is quaint inside and out, has window seating which I love, and a beautiful covered seating area outside, very good-sized. I’ll be coming here for lunch and dinner over time and definitely in the mornings for coffee and a bagel!!

Vegetarian options: All breads have vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options.

Parking: Small parking area on-site plus street parking.

Kid-friendliness: There were no kids during my visit but it’s decorated for families and has high chairs. It’s a peaceful, relaxed place.

I live in the neighborhood and feel so lucky to have this place just around the corner. Coffee and barbecue??! Hell yes. The staff is nothing short of lovely, they’re always so kind and accommodating and super sweet to my kids. Coffee is excellent and they have good decaf espresso which is rare. The breakfast burrito with pulled pork is probably my favorite breakfast item in all of RVA, it’s pure perfection of textures and flavors and spice. The baked goods are also really really good (zucchini carrot muffin omg).
For dinner I recommend catching the pork belly burned ends, they only have them a couple days of the week and it’s pure candy. 10/10 one of the best places in Richmond.

Kid-friendliness: Actually good kids menu, kid temperature drinks, staff is wonderful with children, cute kid chairs outside.

The Brisket is good the sides that come with the platter is not that great but for the price I don’t know if it’s worth it. This place also seems more like a breakfast place more than a lunch or dinner place.
