I’ve lived in the neighborhood for two years. Union is a classic and always hits, s/o tempeh bahn mi and the pimento cheese with Route 11 chips, but what compelled me to write a review is the vegetarian smash burger I had last night! THANK YOU GUYS FOR HAVING THIS OPTION. I love a black bean/veggie patty, but sometimes just want that “meat” experience and not a ton of places in the neighborhood have that. It was so, so good after running the half yesterday.

Union market really is a neighborhood gem. hosting block parties, decent happy hour and a really well curated selection of wines and foods. Staff are pleasant and attentive.
The only criticism I would have is that they fell for the tipping model on every transaction. It's awkward, do I really need to be confronted with a request to tip when I buy a bag of chips? I would much rather they add a surchage or simply increase their prices. It puts the customer on the spot when the employee is standing there watching whether you tip or not.
Kind of ruins an otherwise pleasant experience.

Been coming here for years. Unfortunately, some of the staff is incredibly rude. In particular, several of the cashiers on the market side are immature. One of the males up front talks badly about some of the customers. The manager is occasionally on the floor, but she doesn’t seem to have enough experience to manage her staff. It’s an expensive spot. If I’m going to pay those prices, I’d prefer to do it without the atmosphere of a DQ with washed out 20 year olds

We came in on a Saturday afternoon at 3:40 and ordering to sit down. We asked if we could get the Smashburger even though it said available at 4. The waitress said no with quite an attitude and was unfriendly and rude the rest of the transaction, she also put the wrong number in for our table making us wait. Then when we got our food my BLT had stale hard bread with very minimal bacon. My partner got the reuben, his whole sandwich was smaller than my half BLT. We then went up at 4 to order a smash burger to go after we were both unsatisfied with our meal. We had a different waitress named Sydney and we explained that we were denied earlier and she said they should have done it for us and corrected the situation. She was extremely kind and very helpful.

The vegan club on gluten-free bread is so, so delicious! Filling, fresh and priced well.

Food was great! Options available for all! Service was good. We ate inside as no tables were available outside. You could preorder and pick up your order. If too busy, options available at attached store.
I’m a frequent customer and love this place! Their vegetarian Reuben sandwich with tofu is AMAZING and they have unique snacks, drinks, desserts, food options and cool, friendly staff! Today, I met Wren who made a citrus pie with cream cheese, lime and a berry compote. He introduced himself and was so pleasant! The pie was very yummy and the perfect, sweet end to a long day!

Every time I go out to eat in Richmond, it's weird as hell. Union is the only exception. The staff are nice, and the food is really good. My favorite place to buy a fun afternoon drink (coffee sodas and kombucha).
A neighborhood staple! With a large outdoor dining area, it's a great place for residents of Church Hill to meet, relax, and grab a bite.

We had a very unpleasant experience at Union Market. Our group (four adults and a four-year-old) was setting up a table when my friend’s child, who was holding a small package of fries from McDonald’s, caught the attention of a staff member.
Instead of approaching us politely, one of the women behind the bar stormed over, snatched the menu from my friend’s hand, and shouted: “YOU CAN’T BRING FOOD FROM OUTSIDE HERE!”
We completely understand if that’s the restaurant’s policy, but this was not the right way to treat customers, especially when four adults were prepared to order food. The aggressive tone and behavior were uncalled for.
As we were leaving, another woman who witnessed the incident approached us and commented that “people should not be treated this way.” Unfortunately, this confirmed how inappropriate the interaction was.
That so sad because I lived for three years in Richmond and used to be at this place almost every week. I guess the place changed for worse. Because of this experience, we won’t be returning.

One of my favorite places in Church Hill and Richmond! They make their version of a “Big Mac” on the weekends! It is delicious! The beef is fresh (never frozen) and the accoutrements add such a great flavor. On Sundays they offer live music ( usually 1 or 2 piece groups). The staff are very friendly and make Union a great place to gather with close friends or for a family to meet for a reasonable priced and very tasty meal! I would encourage you to drop by if you haven’t.

Union Market is basically Union Hill’s front porch: good food, cold drinks, a patio full of dogs, and just enough twinkle lights to make you feel like your life is together. The pro move? Skip the glass, grab a bottle from their little grocery, pay the uncorking fee, and suddenly you’re the cleverest person at happy hour.

My son was racially profiled here today and was made to empty his pockets when he got to the counter and of course he didn't have anything. Do not spend you black dollar here!
Union Market is one of my favorite spots, the sandwiches, salads, and everything on the menu are always incredible (and as a vegan, I really appreciate how many delicious options they have!).
Today’s visit was extra special. I came in with my three-year-old son, who is learning to order for himself and do things independently. The staff could not have been more kind and gracious to him, both the bartender and the person at the register treated him with so much respect and patience. It really left such an impression on me as a parent.
It’s rare to find a place that not only has amazing food but also creates such a warm, welcoming environment. Thank you, Union Market, for making our day brighter and bring so sweet to my guy!
