Wow, what a great evening at Bernard's! Just in town for one night and we definitely hit the jackpot. Delicious food, great service and fun, downtown atmosphere! Our server Matt was awesome!! He made terrific menu suggestions and even suggested a few places to visit on our quick visit. If you go be sure to try the crab cakes, brussel sprouts and be sure to ask for Matt!!! Enjoy!!!

Driving South, staying overnight in Roanoke. Would be a regular at Bernard's if we lived here. Nothing disappointed..... from raw oysters to bourbon salmon and cottage pie( Shepard's). Banana butterscotch pudding was the bomb! And they craft a tasty margarita!!
Kudos to the chef/ owners. And Rachel is a very attentive and friendly waitress. Great experience!

We tried this place on a whim and it was outstanding. The service was great, we were able to park right outside on the street, and the atmosphere was really cool.

The food was very well prepared, really tasty and the portions were generous.

It wasn't cheap, but it didn't break the bank either. The entrees and sandwiches were all around 20, which is good for dinner.

The pear martini was delicious!

Short ribs no flavor same with ceasar salad. Table had bread plates but had to ask for bead and it came when meal almost done and had to pay more. Spent whole meal lookin at next table covered in dirty dishes

Absolutely fantastic! From Out of town and just found it. Jimmy at the bar was wonderful. Crab cakes best I’ve ever had + the Pineapple Upside Down Cake martini. Chefs kiss!! Excellent atmosphere. Would definitely come back.

Whoa! Another extremely aggressive, and inappropriate, email from the restaurant. Turns out the person replying to me is one of the owners (the husband). These interactions have really told me everything that I need to know. Beware, Roanoake!

June 03, 2025:
Sad update. I emailed the restaurant directly to communicate my concerns in the foodservice practices that I witnessed, and was met with a lot of defensiveness and excuses (that did not add up, and did not meet state foodservice standards). As someone who worked in foodservice for 20 years this is disappointing.

June 02, 2025:
A friend and I recently passed through on a road trip. We were looking forward to it, but ultimately decided not to eat there.

The male cook/chef in the kitchen:
* Did not wear gloves the entire time we were there.
* Did not wash hands (the hand-wash sink was filled with dishwater and dirty dishes)
* Used bare hands to transfer pasta from pan to plate
* Wiped hands on pants
* Then used the same dirty, bare hands to put raw burgers on the grill
* Wiped hands on pants again
* Shoved food in his mouth
* Wipes hands on pants
* Back to cooking
* Throws pans in hand-wash sink
* I tried my best to NOT toblook after that
* Someone came to collect the dirty dishes from the hand-wash sink when we were just about finished and then the chef/cook finally washed his hands
* Handwash sink was refilled and dishes went back into the in hand-wash sink.
* Saw batter bowl sitting on the trash can just before we left, but that may have been after it was used - not sure.

(Sit at the bar. That's how you can see what's happening in the kitchen.)

Everything about this place is top notch. The sauce for the mussels is so good I've texted everyone I know! Salmon delicious and the crab cakes were stellar (and we are from Maryland). Rachel/Jimmy and Kiera will take such good care of you, you'll invite them on the rest of your vacation!
Superior. Plain and simple.

The crab cakes were delicious. Some of the best I've had. The others also had high praise for their dinners.
After being seated at the reserved time it was a very long time before the waiter came to take our order. Once the order was taken, the wait for the food was normal.

Our Waiter was very attentive without being intrusive. We ordered the Chefs Special, Surf and Turf- filet and scallops and the Bourbon Salmon. Best cooked filet and scallops we’ve had in years. Cooked to a perfect medium rare , could cut the steak with a butter knife. Scallops were perfectly grilled and creamy inside. Salmon was also delicious, recommend the risotto. Thank you to our Waiter for suggesting the vanilla crème brûlée. Exceptional. Wish we lived closer, we’d be regulars.

Bernard’s has consistently excellent food and libations. Great service and pleasant atmosphere!
