There is an element of fun at this place: you can order from your car or go inside and order from the phone at your table (which we did to order dessert) or order at the counter. I understand that it can get very busy here but it was relatively quiet when we arrived at 11 AM on a Saturday. I got a fish sandwich, which normally comes with tartar sauce, with lettuce and tomato also. Unfortunately, my sandwich did not actually come with tartar sauce, even though the young man at the counter had confirmed that I wanted it. I ate my sandwich anyway. It tasted just like I expected, bringing up memories of other square-shaped fish sandwiches I have had. My husband got a pork bar-b-q sandwich and fries, which he thought were fine. The prices here are low, but also the sandwiches are small. We did not mind this since it left room for dessert. We ordered a banana split. I will admit that I was disappointed by the banana split. It too was small and didn't seem to contain much ice cream. Also the toppings were very wet but not flavorful. Normally I would give a restaurant with this food only 3 stars, but the uniqueness of the place elevated the experience. Would I eat here again? Yes. But I would get straight ice cream next time.

Worst food in Staunton, a waste of money. Yes the place is nostalgic but that doesn't excuse the poor food and service! The burgers are just like the frozen ones used at Burger King, the fries and onion rings were burnt.

Burger was decent, but fries were average (and waaaaay over-salted). Even the much hyped milk-shake was just average. The saddest thing was watching the young folk doing their darnedest to keep their head above water - obviously too much demand and far too little staff. Even so, the staff were pleasant and as efficient as their situation would allow. Calling our order in from the red phone at our table was fun/kitschy - except that no one in the kitchen ever answered (at least 5 minutes ringing), so we hung up and went to the register to order instead. (To be fair, one of the staff told us that was a possibility when we sat at the table because they were so slammed.

This place was recommended to me at a coffee shop on my way home from the in-laws. Originally a Dairy-Rite, this place has been opened since 1952 and has a ton of character. Think of what Sonic is trying to replicate. Pull up, hit the call button, order from classics like burgers, hot dogs, chicken sando’s, milkshakes, etc and in about 15-20 someone brings your food out to your car.

I wish I could remember my waitresses name (Sarah, maybe?) but she was so sweet. I asked her about the history of the place and she told me that she first tried it about 5 years ago, started working there about a year ago, and that it was her favorite job ever. Granted, she was on the younger side, but it says something about this place for it to be her favorite job. She spoke highly of the owners, the regulars, and the community which was cool to hear.

On to the good stuff…

I ordered a 1/3lb burger, fries, and an extra-thick milkshake. The only way I can describe this is that it was a blast from the past in all the best ways. This is what I imagine the birth of the hamburger was like. Hand-formed patty, cooked on a griddle, and packed with flavor. Crinkle cut fries were well executed and well seasoned.

I paid an extra $0.25 to have my banana milkshake extra thick and would recommend everyone add a couple c’s (thiccc). Still straw-able but that spoon came in handy towards the end!

If you’re ever in the Salem area, be sure to check in and get a bite of history.

Funky, fun old-time place where you order from your car at a speaker. Or go inside and order off of phone at your table! It's like being in a diner in the '50s.

Wheelchair accessibility: Might be a little problematic inside, but you can order and eat from your car.

Overall, a fun, retro diner.
Service was pleasant, and the atmosphere was fun.
I had 2 dogs and fries.
The buns were sub-par and seemed a bit stale. The rest of the dog/onions/mustard/chili was enjoyable, as were the fries. But bad bread will ruin any dog or sandwich.

Old school drive-in and diner with burgers, chicken, fried shrimp, fish sandwiches, fries, milkshake with ice cream! Seat yourself inside, pick up the red phone at your table, dial 71 and place the order! Always consistently good, great service and very affordable! Or, drive up in your car, place an order and get your meal delivered to your car! Same ownership since 1952!!

So much fun! We enjoyed calling on a wall phone to place our order. LOVED the fries and chicken tenders. Disappointed in the bathroom. Could've been cleaner. The hand air dryer had lots of dust in the vent, so I used the paper towels offered.

Great atmosphere for anyone who enjoys anything Americana. 50s hits on the jukebox, friendly staff, and tasty burgers and shakes. Will definitely stop by when passing through again.

Less than impressed, $12 for a burger smaller than McDonalds McDouble and barely warm fries that I waited about 20 minutes on ….
